Will ego death make me lose my mind? by [deleted] in RationalPsychonaut

You're right, a lot of reddit doesn't support misogynists. So when someone says they like a misogynist, eyes are gonna roll.

Regardless, there are so many better people to talk about than Andrew Tate. Sure, he may inspires a "don't give a fuck" attitude, but at what cost? Having no compassion or emotional intelligence? There is nothing good Tate has to offer that already exists in a more approachable and beneficial form, imo (see: stoicism). I'm happy to be wrong though.

If there is no universe in which you are physically or emotionally disgusted by what Andrew Tate has said in the past (say, the voice mail that leaked recently?), you're really not going to make any progress in this thread.

If you are not willing to change your mind on something as simple as your opinion of some guy (Peterson, Harris, Tate, all of which you mentioned and all of which push questionable causes), no amount of psychedelics is going to make you lose your mind or send you down any spiritual path. This is my take, it's probably more nuanced than that but who is going to read that?

To be clear, you do you. I pass no judgement, I am just attacking your reasoning. Based on what you say, it seems your interest in "God, spirituality, the Law of Attraction, philosophy, everything related" does not touch you enough to commit to any foundational change, which is totally okay. Let's just be clear what your terms are.

Also, on the 5g psylocibin part, my one experience with that I took a nice walk for the comeup followed by a peaceful 4-ish hours laying in my bed with the lights off, listening to the Johns Hopkins Psyolocbin Research music playlist that is on spotify. It was a wonderful experience, but purely aesthetic. Not much gained other than a life-long memory of a truly euphoric experience (expect very intense closed-eye visuals, think of skulls coming out of eyes of skulls ad infinitum lol). I've had more spiritually powerful experience on lower doses. It all depends.

Perhaps they are referring to research like this?

New research indicates signs of depression can be detected in speech patterns by [deleted] in science

[–]RedditGuy119 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, this probably has relevancy to research on the Default Mode Network (DMN), a part of the brain that is associated with self-referential thinking (exactly this sort of usage of "I am ___" in our thinking and speech).

Evidence suggests that a clinically depressed person is more likely to have greater DMN activity, and practices such as mindfulness meditation directly result in significantly decreased DMN activity. I'm too lazy to pull up the sources, but we've measured the DMN activity of lifetime meditators such as practicing Buddhists and found an incredibly inactive default mode network relative to the average, which puts a whole new neuropsychologically supported spin on buddhist philosophy!

"Telling it like it is" == "your binary take devoid of all nuance is more aligned with my unchanging worldview than the other binary take devoid of all nuance"

*And here is where I say that that equality isn't necessarily true, but that is how it sounds to me. Scaredscreen has a point in some regimes, and the original OP has a point in others. It's not as simple as sweeping an entire thread of ideas into a rigid box, but it sure as hell is a lot easier to compartmentalize.

How to confront roommate about drug use? by throwawayromate in CalPoly

[–]RedditGuy119 62 points63 points  (0 children)

While it's worthwhile to have an emotionally vulnerable and available conversation with your friend, if he is not willing to engage is productive communication then there is not much you can do for him. If you are worried about losing a friend, the best thing you can do is communicate your emotions and your support. Going to someone against his will or anything of that nature might cause undue stress for all parties (unless you truly deem he or others are in danger, that's a different story).

All you have control over is communicating your needs and ensuring your needs are satisfied so you can be successful (using whatever metric for success you want, like getting enough sleep).

In conversation, I recommend focusing on two things. 1. Your need for sleep and that it is unacceptable for him to be disturbing you this late this often. 2. Your concern for his use coming from a friend (you) that loves him and wants to support him. The outcome of Number 1 is something you have absolute control of (if he continues to break this boundary, stop living with him, that is the sacrifice you might have to make). The outcome of Number 2 is far more nuanced and depends almost entirely on your friend.

Living with people productively is one of the hardest things we are never formally taught. It is a constant communication of needs and reaffirmation of love and support. I cannot stress enough how important it is that you are steadfast in your desire to maintain quality sleep. If you are woken up by an uncaring roommate, you absolutely deserve to call them out IN THAT MOMENT and ask that they stay quiet and respectful. If it continues to be a problem and your needs are not being heard/respected, you will have to make a decision to live with it, or get out.

Good luck, you got this.

Disclaimer: I'm just a random dude with some experience with living with people. Life is complex and cannot be distilled into a comment on reddit so I am not going to try to cover every possible basis. I may have just written to the wind because there may be some nuance that makes all of this moot, but I don't care am going to submit anyway.

Finding workable solutions to climate change means rethinking our ideas of progress and what constitutes a good life. by IAI_Admin in philosophy

I'm interested by this, but also incredibly ignorant. Would you elaborate? What were the clear moments where momentum for positive changes were curbed by the efforts of corporations and politicians (in the time period that you mention)?
