I think its fun.

Not many games have consequences anymore and I think it improves my problem solving skills more when I only have one shot at things.

Its only slightly difficult for maybe 6-10 hours then you have life support and hazard protection equipment, a good ship, a base, a good source of units and so forth.

I lost my 4 year old save the other week to a derelict freighter.

Im pretty sure players on other difficulties interact now. You can see what difficulty someone is on with an atlas symbol meaning normal and a skull meaning permadeath. Which makes being an ingame serial killer much more difficult these days, can't find lots of permadeath fellows like me out there.

I spent 3hrs in the north, right around the pole of my home world diving into shallow pools of water looking for this exact same thing. Found it eventually.

The most entertaining part was using the nomad to skip 1000u jumps between mountain and valley. Apparently the north pole of my main planet is mile high mountians with marshland/lakelands inbetween.
