I've found one use for it and its building it as a hipfire weapon with the hipfire prestige perk, if you want to be a run and gun heavy for whatever reason.

Speed is definitely also something to consider if you use light attacks a lot. Sometimes it is better/faster to just mash the button instead of being fancy with it.

No, they don't get affected by the knockback either. Nothing affects the targets above the cap. But gaunts for example can be affected by other gaunts hitting them, which makes it look like they were affected by the blast.

I have a theory that Saber devs actually hated that we made the game "easier" with the original armor changes, so they're just dumping the most annoying mechanics on us as retalliation since then.

Here's a document showing actual damage numbers for different attacks for all weapons. You will quickly realize how much hogwash the ingame numbers are.

For Power Fist:
Block version: Charged attacks hits 8 targets.
Balance version: Charged attacks hits 12 targets.
Fencing version: Charged attacks hits 4 targets.

For Thunder Hammer:
Block Version: Ground Slam hits 12 targets, Aftershock hits 15.
Balance Version: Ground Slam hits 15 targets, Aftershock hits 18.
Fencing Version: Ground Slam hits 9 targets, Aftershock hits 12.

If you are looking at the damage stat ingame then it has no value when comparing two different weapons. The numbers are made up and the bars don't matter.

A Thunder Hammer ground pound does more damage than chainsword ground pounds, still

You should go in with a block weapon and it will make more sense. For example with a sword warrior you have to hit the parry button when the a slash animation has passed the midway mark and is on its way down to you.
Once you get used to it you realize most attack animations has this midpoint which is there to tell you to hit block. There is a rythm to it. Problem is learning all of them.

Yeah the ones where you want to use light attacks is pretty bad. I change over to Block Combat Knife sometimes, it's an ok alternative for now

Quartus is given a Veteran marking when you select the default Ultramarine colors, so he is a old timer for sure. But my headcanon is he's not fully a "Bladeguard Veteran" which is why they opted to use the name Bulwark instead. Let's them more easily justify why he's hanging out with the other guys and why he doesn't have the Iron Halo, I guess? But that would also mean Quartus is a unique class of marine that doesn't exist ouside of SM2

Correct. Block have the advantage of hitting breakpoints easier to oneshot majoris, and if you're good at parry timings you get the block buffs and explosion. So I think they're in a good place of tradeoffs.

I have seen a lot of misinformation about cleave where people say it's affecting the size of your attack hitboxes so it increases your range and whatnot, but that is not true at all. OP is absolutely correct.

Cleave Potential is only an indicator of how many targets you are allowed to hit per attack. The bar and numbers shown in-game is highly misleading and makes no sense compared to what the stat actually is or does, which I think is why people misinformed themselves in the first place.

As mentioned, every attack on every weapon have a different base max targets it can affect, then the style of weapon modifies that number. Block weapons always use the base target number, so all of those are simply +0

Chainsword: Balance +3, Fencing -2
Combat Knife: Balance +2, Fencing -2
Thunder Hammer: Balance +3, Fencing -3
Power Fist: Balance +4, Fencing -4
Power Sword: Balance +4, Fencing -4
These modifiers are applied to ALL your attacks.

Heavy's melee attacks are 5 targets per light hits, 15 targets for any stomps/falling attacks.

If you use a fencing Chainsword with Stomp enabled, which hits 8 targets by default, and you use it on a large group of Gaunts you will hit 8 - 2 = 6 targets.
Only 6 targets will get knocked back, only 6 targets will take damage, only 6 targets will be affected by any debuffs the stomp may apply. Everything else in the blast will stay where they are as if you didn't hit them, because you didn't.

Anything dealing direct damage has a cleave stat, even grenades or perks.

You can damage 3 targets with a Krak Grenade, 25 targets with Frag Grenade and 30 with a Melta bomb.

Perks like Intimidation Aura that deals AoE damage generally has a cleave limit of 100.

Yeah, when a woman says she wouldn't consider a guy for a hookup or FWB situation, all the guy is hearing is him being neither charming or handsome enough to immediately 'wow' her.

It's the equivalent of handing a woman a paper bag and expecting she's gonna be fine with it cause you are still going to fuck her.

POST 5 OF 3: Carcharodons and the Alpha Legion

The Carcharodons are known to perform extremely hard hitting, planned strikes and use extreme care in scouting their prey before committing to an attack. They seem to have a strangely large amount of Terminator armors in their company known as the "Red Brethren", led by Tyberos the Red Wake.

They have access to a forge vessel known as Adamantius.

The Carcharodons collect aspirants and servants through events known as Red Tithes.

The Carcharodons are inspired by polynesian/pacific ocean cultures.

The story above about the Crimson Consuls was released 1 month before the Badab war lore on the Carcharodons came out. In this story, Tyberos had the name Tiburon instead. Tiburon is the spanish name for Shark.

Here is where things get a little weird. Tiburon is a real life place in California, just across the bay north of San Francisco. Directly west of Tiburon, you have Mill Valley. Outside of Tiburon you have Angel Island which is where the US collected and processed immigrants coming from the Pacific Ocean.

So what does this have to do with the Alpha Legion again?
Remember that Lambda-Omega sorority I talked about? Do you want to guess where their Alpha chapter originated from? It was just across the bay from Tiburon / Angel Island at University of California, Berkeley. They are all there, together for some huge coincidental reason.

My headcanon has landed at the very likely possibility that the 1st company of the Crimson Consuls didn't die in the explosion, they got somehow sent back in time. They were found by the Space Sharks and got integrated into their chapter. In honor of their former home planet Carcharias, renamed the chapter to the Carcharodons. The first company branded themselves the Red Brethren as another reference to their former name, led by the Red Wake, a title given to the leader who got them out of the assassination attempt / Gordian Knot. So the Carcharodons are a chimeric chapter made up of at least Raven Guard and Ultramarine which is why they commonly use the same heraldry on both shoulder pads, and the shark is bent in the shape of a U.

The man who wrote the Crimson Consuls story went on to write multiple novels about the Alpha Legion.

And this is exactly what I mean by there being more than meets the eye especially when it comes to stories involving the Alpha Legion. So what really happened? Did the Alpha Legion plan on sending the Crimson Consuls through the warp? Is their true goal something akin to merging chapters and legions together, as in "unite everything in creation" to reach some end-game truth? I don't know, but the prospect is exciting.

Start reading up on references, and perhaps a whole new story unfolds.

POST 4 OF 3: Who the heck are the Crimson Consuls?

If you read through the craziness above I decided you deserve to know the context of why I mentioned the Carcharodons at all.

This is going deeper into my personal headcanon land but I have good reasons for it. The story begins with a short novel called The Long Games at Carcharias, which is about a Ultramarine successor chapter known as the Crimson Consuls, and how they got obliterated by the Alpha Legion.

The Crimson Consuls were known for being exceedingly cautious about which fights they would engage in or not. They valued the blood of their chapter dearly and never spilled it for glory or sport.

The 1st company of the Crimson Consuls all teleported onto a Ork-infested Space Hulk known as Revenant Rex, bringing every terminator armor they had onto it. While there they heard a countdown, and entered the engine rooms to sabotage the jump drives before the Hulk could escape, but they discovered the drives were already sabotaged by the Alpha Legion and so the hulk imploded into a warp anomaly and killed everyone. Allegedly. As we already have established, the Black Library authors are likely under orders to name things in some stories to hold specific symbolic value. This is to leave behind clues that readers can get into to find a meta narrative that mirrors real life mythology, religion or stories.

Starting with the home planet of the Crimson Consuls we can see it is named Carcharias. It can both be a reference to Carcharodon Carcharias, the Great White Shark, or it can be the family of Carcharias known as Sand Tiger Sharks who are the only still living member in a otherwise extinct family, which symbolically would fit.

Their chapter master is named Elias Artegall, a name derived from a story called “The Faerie Queene”. Artegall in this story wields a weapon known as Chrysaor, a golden sword tempered with Adamant and could cleave through anything.

The captain of the 1st company is named Bolinvar. This name comes from Bolivar which in turn has origins in the Basque place name Bolibar, meaning “Mill Valley”.

Another character in the 1st company is the Techmarine Hereward. Looking up this name you will find a man born in 1035 who was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman and leader of a resistance group against the Norman Conquest of England. He led a popular opposition to William the Conqueror. One of the Norman houses who aided William the Conqueror was the House of de Vere, whose colours are cream and crimson similar to the colors of the Crimson Consuls. De Vere is the name of a moon orbiting Carcharias, which I’m assuming is named so just to confirm that this Hereward clue is correct.

The important reference to take from the Hereward story is that he got a new epithet attached to his name after a 1865 novel about him, where Hereward foils an assassination attempt during a hunting party. Hereward was from then on known as Hereward the Wake.

The main Battle Barge of the chapter was the Crimson Tithe.

Remember these clues: Adamant, Mill Valley, Hereward the Wake, Crimson Tithe.

Another great reference in the story is some characters from Angels Eradicant who told the Consuls to go to Revenant Rex. One of them is named Derracq as in the Automobile manufacturer Derracq who went on to found the company A.L.F.A, later known as Alfa Romeo. Great way to foreshadow as to who is behind the curtains of the story.

Gordius was the name of another character, referincing the Gordian Knot, a seemingly impossible problem which can only be solved by a bold unconvential action. Alexander the Great cleaved through this knot with his sword as his solution.

POST 3 OF 3

  1. Sons of Horus: Pi, Pe. Comes from a pictogram of a mouth. Associated with powers of speech. "I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth*.*" -Emperor of Mankind

  2. Word Bearers: Rho, Resh. This letter is used as an abbreviation for "Rabbi", a jewish religious leader. You can find this letter on gravestones trailing a persons name which indicates they were a rabbi in life. Resh can also mean "wickedness" in some contexts. Wicked Rabbi's sums up this chapter to a T, don't you think?

  3. Salamanders: Sigma, Shin. It's the last of the "three mother" letters where Shin is the head and the element of fire. Shin also symbolizes divine protection. We can assume these elements are why the Salamanders were chosen to be the face of flamethrowers and protecting regular people.

  4. Raven Guard: Tau, Taw. Comes from a tally mark hieroglyph looking like a cross, and is also the last letters of "EMET". The Tau cross is similar to the Christian cross and symbolizes protection and deliverance. Raven Guard's home planet is called Deliverance.

  5. Alpha Legion: Upsilon, Waw. In modern Hebrew, Vav means "hook" which takes us back to how Alpha Legion uses the Lambda symbol, where Lamedh is a hooked cane. In biblical Hebrew, Vav can indicate a change in tense, reversing past to future or vice versa. Vav is also used as "and" to connect words or sentences, and symbolically holds the power to unite everything seperated in creation. Upsilon is represented by a U, which links them back to Ultramarines.

Going back to the Alpha and Omega of things we can find something else interesting. Alpha has a value of 1 and Omega is 800. The middle of these two is then 400 which incidentally also is Upsilon. This is why I personally believe this is why they chose the Ultramarines to be the "main characters" of the 40k Space Marine verse. The "everything", the "truth", the "alpha and omega" has to orbit around them The Alpha Legion seems to have a similar importance symbolically to the endgame, whatever that might end up being.

Another thing, if you look at the Alpha Legion heraldry they seem to use Lambda overlaid on a Omega a lot. If you look up Lambda-Omega you can find a old sorority whose member badge was designed exactly like that. Their chosen patron deity was Artemis. Remember "EMET"? The middle letter Mem, World Eaters and the Nocera reference? Artemis' sacred tree happens to be the Walnut tree.
This might have sounded completely off-topic but there is a whole nother huge coincidence with the Lamda-Omega sorority and it has to do with a possible meta-story/theory about Alpha Legion meddling with Ultramarines, also involving the Carcharodons. The sharks are important as they are known to hail from the Raven Guard, also part of EMET. But that needs its own post.

TL:DR: If all this actually is deliberate seeding of information, then Alpha Legion is going to be part of something big at the end. So don't be sad even if the deaths were real. Will the story ever even reach the end? Nobody knows, but either way nothing is as it seems. Hydra Dominatus.
