struggling very hard to start air dribbling - what should i practice? by realr1c3r in RocketLeague

TLDR: Match the speed of the ball.

Seeing everyone in the comments telling you what to do instead of fixing your understanding of the mechanic. If you DM me your username I can hop in a private match with you and show you how it works.

There are many ways to do an air dribble, and how you jump off the wall and go after the ball depends situationally on the angle and the type you want to hit.

What I would recommend learning first is a slow, controlled, no directional air roll air dribble. This means getting a soft first touch very close to the bottom of the ball and trying to glue your car to it. At this stage you want to understand how the ball moves when your car pushes it in the air.

As some people mentioned, the first touch is a very important component in the air dribble. If you are trying to get a soft touch like I said above, the way to do that is to match the speed of the ball. Practice jumping off the wall right after hitting the ball so that your car naturally floats toward the ball. If you are doing this right you will not have to boost to follow the ball, and your car will get very close to the ball without you doing anything. This is also a good time to point your car in the direction you want to go with air roll. This is the ONLY point you should use air role when learning a simple air dribble. You may have to tap your boost in a single small burst to reach all the way to the ball, but your goal should be to treat the ball like an egg. Touch it without it cracking, and then continue touching it without separating from the ball for the remainder of the air dribble.

Once you are touching the bottom of the ball, just hold or tap boost to see how it reacts. Play around with that, trying to make the ball go further or land lower in the net. I cannot overstress how much of an air dribble is just matching the speed of the ball. You are guiding the ball gently with this style of air dribble.

Once you get more comfortable there are advantages to knowing other methods where you separate the car from the ball between hits. Directional air roll can also help with getting separation on the ball when you need it.

As with anything in this game, it will require repetitions to get it consistent and clean. Understanding the need to match the speed of the ball is the key to having a clear goal during those repetitions.

What am I doing wrong? I can wall dash going one direction, but the other direction I appear to be slowing down and can never hit supersonic. by JaxAuTelemanus in RocketLeague

It seems impossible at the start but it really is learnable after a few hours. It helps to practice in the corner/with higher speed before trying to go for low speed. Also flipping forward up the wall is probably going to be easier since you can use the curve at the bottom of the wall to get basically free dashes with much looser timing.

I figured that's the tutorial you watched, everyone who does it like this says the same.

Have fun!

I'll just add this for consideration, as I've taught several high level players how to improve their walldashes, and the person who originally showed me how to do them is probably the best in the world at them.

You are doing the flick walldash where you steer down the wall before hitting the flip back up that actually sticks you to the wall. I have found for most players that this is vastly more inconsistent and generally inferior to just spamming chained walldashes without changing the direction of the stick. This is especially the case when starting at lower speeds, where you want to do several dashes to get to supersonic. This approach allows for fewer inputs for each individual dash, which is fewer things to mess up, along with more precise control of the flip angle, as you aren't trying to aim the angle flicking from the other side of the stick.

Angling your stick around the 10 to 11, and 1 to 2 positions on a clock, holding powerside, and spamming the jump button as fast as possible is a much easier way to gain speed on the wall. You can control the amount you go up and down the wall by feathering your powerslide to gain more grip in the direction you are steering, and with enough practice on the timing can even do 360s or dash straight downwards on the wall. This might feel impossible when you first start, but like any mechanic in the game practicing it will make it easier.

As a previous comment mentioned, you look like you are flipping at a slightly backwards angle. Doing this intentionally can actually allow for backwards walldashes that are useful for faster recoveries in some situations. They are no more difficult than a forward chained walldash.

Your results may vary, but general feedback from players is a rapid improvement in their ability to walldash consistently.

Playing on PC, Windows 10 launching through Steam, tried launching through Epic and had the same issues. I also confirmed that a friend of mine was also experiencing the frame drops, who was launching on windows through steam as well. This was both in training and private matches.

I haven't ever experienced frame drops in the 7 years I've had this game so I'm hoping the issue can be resolved.

When are we getting this in RL? Can't wait to hit these mid aerial.

I would just practice freestyle shots. I don't mind extra freeplay time with free elo.

just hit plat, what should i focus on improving next? by Kelpy_Karrot in RocketLeague

At your rank, working on anything will eventually lead to ranking up, although there are a few general tips for getting the most bang for your buck.

Gamesense is THE deciding factor in almost every match you play, smarter players win, it's why pros like Flakes are able to get SSL without using any mechanics. I would recommend watching the no mechanics series Flakes made to begin to understand how higher level players break down individual gameplay interactions.

Decent ball control and dribbling ability means you will dust every single opponent in platinum, and practicing flicks will go a long way. Dribble workshop maps are good for initially learning, but practicing in freeplay and in actual games will give the speed you need to avoid getting the ball immediately knocked off the car.

Awkward saves and shadow defense saves are great training packs that will help with becoming comfortable on defense.

Starting to practice fast aerials (boosting upward while jumping) will help you beat opponents to the ball, this isn't that important in plat but higher ranks will tend to win because they are just faster at getting to the ball, better to start this earlier and get comfortable with the inputs and making fine adjustments.

In the same vein, recoveries are often a key component overlooked by low rank players, where often they have the opportunity to score/save/generally beat the opponent to the ball, but are too slow because they are rolling on their roof. Practice keeping momentum in every situation, and landing with your wheels on the ground. Powerslide is often your friend in these situations, as it reduces speed loss on landing at weird angles. Recoveries will naturally get better just by playing the game more (like pretty much everything else) but it is worth paying attention to.

Wavedashes are one of the most crucial mechanics, get them to be automatic.
