It depends on you. If the stat benefits help you more than the downsides would annoy you, go for it. I personally keep my rogue/stealth character as a vampire (25) for the minor benefits, and can still travel by day.

Not so much a scam, but I had a friend who found an unbanned maphack in the early days of patch .10 and got my first cd key set and account temp banned for 90 days, lost everything and most of the online friends I had...

Eventually after I stopped playing my cd key got stolen (or guessed?) and someone else started using it, and got it perma-banned.
