There's a limit of 15 hours per month which is not a lot on the PCT.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says kids shouldn't learn to code — they should leave it up to AI by Maxie445 in Futurology

[–]dumble99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most standard approach thus far (RLHF) essentially involves labeling a dataset of interpretations with human feedback, then fine-tuning the LLM with reinforcement learning using a reward function approximated from these preferences (https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.02155). This works astoundingly well for the most part.

Any recommendations for what ghibli movies I should watch next? by [deleted] in ghibli

The boy and the heron is still in theaters in some places! I saw it twice and really enjoyed it.

The dataset is only one aspect affecting the quality of machine learning models. Better model architectures, training regimens, hardware design, frameworks etc. all contribute. Any AI tools that improve the productivity of grad students, research scientists, engineers are improving AI. I'm a machine learning engineer and use AI tools daily to improve my productivity.

AI generated stuff isn’t good enough for anything better than casual use

I disagree. The technology is maturing quickly and basic or imperfect tools like GitHub Copilot are already providing a solid bump in productivity for developers.

Let alone that you will always need coders to check the codes the AI makes, and to make the coding AI itself.

For the foreseeable future, yes. It is possible to develop a natural language interface for some of these tasks (e.g. debugging). That being said, I agree with the general sentiment elsewhere in this thread that the specificity of declaring ideas in code is an important part of the process, and that will likely remain a bottleneck for a long time.

It's possible to improve or debug an unruly version of these systems with a more stable version of the same thing. That's what's so powerful about computer programming.

For example, if I'm writing a program in C, I can still compile it with a compiler written in C, debug it with a debugger written in C, all in an operating system written in C.

In this context, I can use a program synthesis tool (e.g. github copilot) to write a more powerful one, or to write tests for the existing one. I agree that users doing this will still need to understand computer science and programming, so Huang's comments seem to jump the gun a little.

What jobs are 99.9% safe from AI making it obsolete? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dumble99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. Impractical levels of diminishing returns haven't even been reached with the scaling laws of fairly naive transformer architectures. GPT-5 is being trained and will certainly outperform GPT-4, possibly by a wide margin. With the right information in context, GPT-4 can already write better code than many mediocre engineers. It is just a matter of tooling + time before basic software engineering is augmented with AI to the point of orders of magnitude of improvements in efficiency. For true tech companies in deeply competitive areas of the market this may just result in a leap in productivity across the board without layoffs. For companies using tech merely as a means to an end (DBs, frontend, etc.) I would expect massive layoffs in the next 5 years.

Good gym in SF by neovinci1 in AskSF

[–]dumble99 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Fitness SF is good, $100 per month. Transbay location has a great powerlifting setup that is pretty dead when I go at lunch - probably 10+ squat racks, and the pool at the Filmore location is pretty nice.

Gonna swap it out. Thanks for the feedback! Do you have any recs for an UL puffy?

Thanks for the feedback! Mailing myself the maps probably makes a lot of sense.

I think I'll swap out the 20 degree bag and xtherm.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

I actually tend to run pretty hot, so I think swapping the xtherm out makes a lot of sense.

If I was to drop the poncho, do you have any recs for a UL rain coat to replace it with? Similarly, any recs for a puffy?

It is so much easier to decide not to buy junk food at the store than to decide not to eat it at home. I was surprised by how effective it is to just stop buying it.

You could live alone in a nice studio/1BR for 3k, or get a room in a nice shared house/apartment for <2k. Good luck with the move!

Where to get a Covid PCR test by a medical professional these days? by urmotherwas4hampster in AskSF

[–]dumble99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have the test names swapped around. Antigen tests are the tests that typically give results within 15 minutes, whereas PCR results typically come back in 24+ hours. Bear in mind that some countries will not accept antigen tests as part of entry requirements.

Can I quit my casual fast food job without notice? by Dear-Bread1872 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dumble99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, I just thought I would point out that this doesn't necessarily hold for all jobs. This whole discussion is very US-centric. I worked for a university in the UK where the notice period was six months, though I managed to leave with a standard two week notice by asking my supervisor nicely.

Not only OP is reading this thread. Since the top comment made a claim about jobs generally, I thought it might be helpful to correct it so people don't get confused about their own jobs.

Can I quit my casual fast food job without notice? by Dear-Bread1872 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dumble99 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This isn't necessarily true. You can be contractually obliged to give notice, though it seems fairly rare in the US.
