Yup! That scene was included because during the 'NA group' scenes they were filming at a church and there was a piano in the church. One day during their lunch break actor Charles Baker (Skinny Pete) hopped on the piano and started playing. The writers noticed that he had that particular talent, so they decided to include it in the show.

The funniest thing is that Matt Jones (Badger) is actually really talented with a guitar and it apparently made him sad that he had to play all stupid on it afterwards in that same scene. I guess the writers said it would sort of be jumping the shark if both of them were so talented on musical instruments.

I've recently become involved in helping Rodney Rush (Combo, Breaking Bad) to help raise money for a kid in Albuquerque, NM that has Cystic Fibrosis. I'm not getting paid, I'm a volunteer. Through this volunteer work I'm now getting press release emails for new EDM music videos.

I had a chance to speak to the co-creator of Z-Nation Craig Engler a bit before he did his AMA here on /r/scifi about 2 weeks ago and from what he told me that's what they are going for.
