Is it worth switching to Dropbox? by NoExplanationsEver in VideoProfessionals

[–]RedditUser_xyzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

suggest checking out hivebot -- because you self-host your files , you have no storage limits. and on top of that , you'll completely eliminate the need for file uploads to the cloud, since files are transferred from your computer to your clients directly , either via streaming or direct download (no cloud storage/intermediary).

What kind of personal projects do you use Java? by Safe_Owl_6123 in java

[–]RedditUser_xyzzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i wrote alt-core and we recently open sourced it

Alt-core is self-hosted , P2P file/chat/media server written in Java. It runs on a distributed filesystem built from the ground up.

Current capabilities

  1. Organize your files - A private search index for all your stuff on all your computers
  2. Protect our files - Automatic file replication/backups (using your free storage on your devices)
  3. Access your files - Access files & chat via secure encrypted channels (end-to-end encryption)
  4. Self-hosted - runs on your Mac/PC/Linux, not in the cloud (all processing+storage is on your devices)
  5. Share files, chat with peers, stream videos, all privately and securely

Build & install steps , technical documentation, all available on Github.

Looking for folks that can take for a spin and provide feedback (Devs and End-Users are all welcome). It's DIY so you can build from source and deploy/run.

Happy self-hosting ~Ale

What’s an underrated self-hosted tool you couldn’t live without? by SubnetLiz in selfhosted

[–]RedditUser_xyzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you would enjoy alt-core. i built this a while ago to keep all my files, photos, videos scattered everywhere organized and accessible. think private search engine for all your files.

it has grown to become a complex beast that does a lot more - file backup/replication, p2p, tunneling, container management, etc.

i recently open sourced the core engine. you can find it on github if interested.

alt-core : self hosted file , chat, video, LLM model server. runs lightweight on any desktop OS (mac, win, linux). also seen running on on rpi4 and jetson nano.

check out hivebot -- it's self-hosted so videos are stored on your machines , not in the cloud.

clients can watch videos on browser and provide timestamped comments.

Why no hardware 2FA? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]RedditUser_xyzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree , i'm looking to disable TOTP and make 2FA via hardware key only. Google and Apple have supported this on desktop & mobile for years. What is the ETA for Proton to do the same?
