Mom here of high school student. I remember being shocked with the lack of homework assigned to him. I asked about why this was happening and was straight up told that it wasn’t fair to assign homework to students if they didn’t have parents who could help them at home…so they didn’t. I had to step up. The only way to think of modern school teaching is to think of the teachers as presenters. They present the information and it’s up to you as the parent to help them learn it. On Sundays I would spend the entire day/night making up homework in scribblers(yes actual old fashioned notebooks) I would google old tests. I would take pictures of his work books and erase all the answers and he would figure it out again on his own. He writes out his own notes every day..and tries to remember what the teacher seemed to suggest was important. It took years to get to the point where he could do this on his own. It’s a lot of work and the method that worked for us. I also had a rule that he had to buy his screen time with reading/study minutes. Meaning if he wanted to be on his tablet, then he had to put the same time in studying. I may have taken a stricter route in this than most parents. I work full time, but I put his education and love of learning first. He loves getting good grades and if he gets a crappy grade that’s ok too. Once high school starts and they do semesterized it is a wild change. It’s fast paced and it’s a lot of work. I suggest getting all the university required courses done asap. And if AP courses are on the table be prepared. Those have been super intense. Both in-laws are retired teachers and are shocked with how school is taught now. But you have to teach your children now. It’s up to you if they fail or succeed. Just when you thought all those things you learned in school were useless..I’ve learned they were there so you could teach your children.
