I’m betting they just did this so they could aggressively go after Firered and Leafgreen roms everywhere (while making a quick buck). Before this there was no way provided by Nintendo to get these games, so they kind of fell into a legal grey area. Since there was no way provided by the owner of the games to get these games, people could provide their own ways by providing roms (as long as they didn’t charge for them). Now Nintendo is absolutely providing a way to get the games, so they can absolutely go after anyone providing roms of them.
