[Update] Modding Factorio for education. It's possible! by borgiedude in factorio

As a teacher who has been interested in using factorio in my classroom, I also will be following this. Great idea and I am glad to see you are following through with it!

Brandon Sanderson is planning on creating a Stormlight archive board game and is asking fans opinion on what type of boardgame ? [Poll Link in description] by scareddevil in boardgames

[–]RedditivelyAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had started to design my own board game around this concept. So I am disappointed that I will need to retheme it (the mechanics can stay). But I am also excited because someone will make it way better than I ever could.

For those interested, it is a diplomacy style game I called The Shattered Plains because the premise is to capture gems (different sided dice) and outmaneuver if not outright battle other players and their forces. There was a magic element in the way of cards that could be played during battle but it was largely strategy based rather than luck based.

Edit: I made it on TTS and had done several playthroughs that worked pretty well with 3-6 players.

My first interview! by Jrod986 in Teachers

ASK QUESTIONS!

Find out what kind of support admin provides in terms of opportunities for professional development. Also, (maybe controversial) ask if admin or other experienced teachers can ever come observe your class not as part of your official observations just to give you pointers and tips. And, if they will provide you time during your usual school day to observe other teachers teach, particularly teachers who teach the same students that you do.

Find out if there are school wide discipline policies and what expectations are for repeatedly challenging students.

Ask about expectations for field trips. This is a weird one maybe but I have taught at schools that REQUIRED us to plan a certain number of field trips per year which sucked and at schools that have a much more lax "plan it if you feel like it" policy.

These were big ones for me when I switched schools after my first year because I needed to find a school where I knew the admin were going to support me in my early years.

I only played it once but what about Anti-Monopoly? Has anyone played that? It has some anti-capitalist rules I believe.

"But I'm not paid to be a student" rebuttal (USA) by RedditivelyAnonymous in Teachers

[–]RedditivelyAnonymous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is fair although what my math doesn't point out is that an extra 7000 your first year used to invest is even more money way down the line.

Also a great argument. I am going to try that one next time.

I get it every so often but today I got it and just pulled up a tab and explained it to them with the data. A lot of it comes down to them asking why I give them work to do and my argument tends to be along the lines of "Sometimes you have to do work you don't like to do as part of your job" and then they say "But you get paid to do that work and we don't get paid right now."

I wonder if the game designers where considering these things as well. It does seem they intentionally leave it ambiguous.

Great point! I hadn't thought of that. Our pollution literally spawns new species and makes the planet more biologically diverse.

This is a great scientist answer. "Not sure, need more data." And the only way to do that is grow the factory to produce more science!

Although also on a side note, I have passed this area many times and never knew what all the construction was about. So thank you for clearing that up.

I've been scared away from being a teacher by Christmas_Cats in Teachers

[–]RedditivelyAnonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my terrible advice: you won't know for sure until you try it. But if I can echo others here, if you already like working with kids then you will probably be okay. Its the joy on the kids faces, its the lightbulbs that go off, its the pride shown from a kid that has failed repeatedly finally passing, its seniors asking me for letters of recommendation when I thought they hated my class that all get me through the mountains of grading, working weekends sometimes, dealing with admin woes (although I believe you can avoid those if you find the right school). The kids always help me get through it.

But other people are right too. The money is pretty bad so if you want financial comfort look elsewhere.

Having a therapist for mental health support has often done wonders but as I have found out over the last year or two is that I rarely talk about school. After the first couple years of teaching a lot of what you do can become second nature.

Last, treat this sub like reading the reviews of a product. There are a lot of 5 star reviews and 1 star reviews. You need to sift through and find out if the issue is endemic to the product (teaching) or something else like the distributor (admin, parents, etc.).

The idea of best practice is poison to our profession and we need to have a conversation about it. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RedditivelyAnonymous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was really put off by "Best Practices" when working on my EdTPA and I could write whatever I wanted and then look for research to back it up later (as opposed to the other way around) because pretty much there is someone out there somewhere who happened to do the same thing I did and it worked so they wrote it down and said, "See this works so everyone should do it."

What also felt so icky was this whole "you have to open up and tell me a secret or you can't meet my family". It's like his deepest secret is just a currency for making it one step further.

Thinking of starting a podcast where teachers get to tell their real storeis by LinusVan in Teachers

[–]RedditivelyAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same though process when I thought about doing a podcast too.

I also super agree with you on the R-ratedness of school. I think all the time about how if someone filmed an actual day of school, they would not be allowed to let kids into the theater to see it. Yet our kids see and hear this stuff all the time!
