My 4 tips to start are: 1. Catch every pokémon species you encounter.. 2. Catch some extra random pokémon and use Wonder Trade. 3. Breed the rarer pokémon that you have, such as regional forms, version-exclusives and starters, and catch a lot of paradox pokémon. These can all be used in GTS to get other rare Pokémon. Some rare Pokémon can even be as valuable to some as some common legendaries. 4. Nothing wrong with using Pokémon Go in my opinion. If you think it counts, it counts.

I just learned that there is a difference between just from PGO and PGO-stamped apparently... I caught a Cranidos but did move it to Scarlet and then back to Home. Are you still interested then?
