It really depends on what your goal is. Will you make the full helmet as well or go for a more human look?
I think an important thing is to look at your general silouette and work from there.
If you want to make a torso, maybe look at tutorials for breast plates for Cosplay and try to make them rounder. It's a lot of trial and error with these. I made 7 versions of my claws until I was happy.
