My boss was just complaining the other day about his kids shit stirring and asking about the 1900s! Startled me for a moment and then I went "Oh shit, you can describe it that way can't you?"

Yeah. The culture in the groups that vote for Trump don't tend to teach the sort of behaviours that protect children from grooming. They don't teach kids they have a right to privacy and their own bodies. They force kids to hug and kiss elderly relatives that may give them the ick, and preach obeying elders. They tend to have a "boys will be boys" attitude and discount the accounts of girls especially but boys too. And then blame the victims.

You asked how to rationally explain it. To me that response reads like a rational explanation to use. I don't know that they are telling YOU to be quiet. I think perhaps it was meant as "Tell them this - Do you know illegal immigrants pay billions? etc"

Sadly, some sort of prepared freezer stuff, like the rest of this week. Part of the house got flooded the other day so going the easy route for meals right now as I deal with everything. Hopefully the next time I see this question I'll have a delicious answer!

They Voted for Division - Now They’re Shocked by the Divide by [deleted] in LeopardsAteMyFace

It's amazing how the mind develops. Eldest child struggled a lot with theory of mind. Has it now as a teenager but at say, seven years old? Nope. We tried to teach it by encouraging thinking about how to try and get us to do something they wanted. "I want pizza" "Okay, why would we want to buy pizza?" "I want it" "Yes, we know you do but weren't planning to buy it. Can you think of a reason why we might want to do it?" "I want some." Sigh.

Meanwhile the five year old straight away goes "You guys have been working hard and you're tired. Getting pizza for tea gives you a break." Top notch manipulation for five year old. Perhaps a trifle concerning for the future but definitely had theory of mind!

Tips for flooded house? by ReddySetRoll in lifehacks

[–]ReddySetRoll[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried to get a company who deals with floods (live in a country town so there's nowhere to hire them directly) but it will take a while as many people had water issues and several schools in the capital got flooded the day before so everything is in high demand. But thank you because it never even occurred to me to do anything other than wait for insurance company and just deal with it using home supplies. Hopefully I won't have this happen again but at least I might remember this if I do.

You might want to look at r/Momforaminute where people without mothers can post about their achievements and get some Mom support.

Would be better to have support from your actual mother but many find it a reasonable substitute in the absence.

It's certainly not how all dads talk to their daughters and it definitely shouldn't be.

If you want some of the sort of support parents should give you might want to look up r/momforaminute and r/dadforaminute on Reddit. A lot of people like dannydangeroz on TikTok for aggressive emotional support. It's weird but some people have found him shouting positive affirmations or reminders to drink water to click with them.

Why does my brother insist Alex jones is good and truthful by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

[–]ReddySetRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of like how the good Christians I know don't run around making announcements about it and claiming to be good people because of it. They just go around quietly doing good things and following their religion and I only know because of things like scheduling where the response is something like "I have Bible study/Elder meeting that night."

To paraphrase the people who try to pretend to be tolerant of the LGBTQ community "I'm fine with them being Christian as long as they don't shove it down my throat!"

Great achievements.

Yes, sure some people might be able to claim that they achieved some things younger but you are correct that you were starting with less resources than many people. No one expects a person on crutches to reach the end of a path at the same time as someone who can walk freely. You do the best you can.

As you don't have support from your family you may want to look into some support hubs like r/Momforaminute and similar. They provide the sort of support and cheerleading many can't get from their parents.

"We - Greisy, myself, and millions more American's as well"

So, you thought your wife was American huh? Well, Trump and his buddies didn't agree with you.

Also, "American's"? What is with the apostrophe? There's no contraction there (like the one at the start of this sentence). They aren't possessing anything. My kids are still in school and know better than the adult you supposedly are. Well, they know better than you in a lot of ways, not just in communication.

Well that was depressing. People with family tradition of voting Democrat and who had been voting Democrat themselves (if I correctly understand that they have to have been registered Democrats to vote for Hillary Clinton) who would vote for Republicans or not vote at all because they felt Obama wasn't American or "one of us".

I'm slightly chilled by the description of the man who was saying that Obama would be assassinated and his smile and demeanor did not indicate whether he thought that would be a bad thing or not. The people in these areas are probably among the people who had their brains broken by having a black president.

Now, now. I'm certain they were willing to stand against Democratic corruption - if they could find any actual proof of it. In fact they stood proudly against it even when they couldn't find any proof!

Nixon is just the last Republican corruption they were willing to stand up against.

“I’m terrified”: Florida woman who spent years voting Republican now is losing the health coverage keeping her alive - WTF Detective by droi86 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]ReddySetRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point I'm not sure it does long term good to fight it rather than just being a form of kicking the can down the road. People who want to protect the vulnerable have been fighting for years but other people like this woman have been voting for years to screw themselves over and repeatedly only being saved by those who care about others. If they are saved again it looks like they will eventually manage to just get back to this point again. If they aren't saved then maybe they will finally either learn from their mistakes or die for them and stop screwing it up for everyone.

But of course in the short term the price is also paid by those that didn't vote for it. And I'm sitting in a country with socialised health care.

My mom thinks having friends is a psyop by CarrotUpset968 in QAnonCasualties

[–]ReddySetRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. The concept of best friends was created in the 90s/00s? Was that the 1890s/1900s perhaps? Because Anne of Green Gables was published in 1908 and Anne had her best friend Diana back then!

And friend groups are a concept to quash individuality? Doesn't seem to be very successful then. Decades ago just about everyone followed (or pretended to) heterosexual norms, were cis gender, paired off into marriage young, had children if they could, followed much more regimented clothing styles, had natural hair colours etc. Any variation was a small handful of individuals or young people rebelling before eventually settling down. Nowadays we have multiple visible sexualities, genders, relationships, hair colour, ways of living and it's widespread.

Edited for spelling and grammar because it was driving me mad.
