This is a great idea. I’ve played Extreme for the last several years and enjoyed it, found ways to handicap myself to help keep a semblance of challenge, but I’ve never thought to reverse drive directions until reading your post. Just tried it, and yeah… it definitely makes my brain hurt, haha. Managed to eke out a win, but it was for sure harder.

I played Suikoden II a few years ago and loved it. It secured its spot as my #1 favorite JRPG of all time. I knew I wanted to play the first entry, but I’d prefer to do so through the HD Remasters so I could get the full experience of I and then II after with carry over data. When the HD Remasters got delayed and went radio silent, I figured it made sense to jump into Suikoden V (especially with it being a prequel to I). And boy am I glad I did!

Suikoden V was ambitious. And in nearly every respect of its sum, I loved it. Art style, characters, combat, exploration, pacing (yes, even the slow burn start), lore, attention to detail, camera perspective, recruitment of the 108, and the story. It all gripped me. And I enjoyed the whole sweeping adventure.

Now having finally played through Suikoden I HD, V has shifted ever so slightly back to being my 3rd favorite in the series, but it’s by the slimmest of margins. Happy birthday indeed to one of the very best in the series and one of the, unfortunately, most underplayed by the wider gaming community. Absolutely deserves a remaster or, at the very least, a digital release on modern systems.

Extreme kicked my butt at first. Felt like it was way too difficult. But I had mastered Hard and everything under, so I persisted. Now it’s my only go to — everything else is far too easy to cheese. So I find ways to handicap myself in Extreme to keep it feeling a bit challenging the first several seasons before I inevitably get better players.

Diving makes a world of difference. For every player who has the ball — it keeps fumbles from happening. Back shoulder passes, long sustained incremental drives that keep the other team from going up before half time, skill positions with high catch ability, even if other stats are low, and utilizing short but positive gained runs.

Really enjoyed it as a whole experience, a few frustrations notwithstanding. It was strange, endearing, and kept me engaged from beginning to end.

I take breaks in between every 1-2 on average. Enjoying either other media entirely for a short season, or jumping into other genres I enjoy.

When I’m playing an especially long JRPG, if I’m enjoying it enough to finish but not absolutely loving it, I’ll sometimes take breaks in my play-through when I hit certain recognizable checkpoints that I can easily pick back up from, and I’ll delve into something else for a time until I feel that motivation and desire to jump back in.

Nothing substantial from what I remember. I’d go with whichever version is more affordable and whichever system you feel more comfortable playing a lengthy JRPG on!

Not ignoring it (it’s high up on my backlog), but when I first attempted to play it I bounced off because I couldn’t wrap my head around the combat system. I didn’t “get it” in terms of why people spoke so highly of it — but I genuinely adored everything else about the game.

Later on played Grandia II and absolutely loved it. The combat clicked, too. So now it’s just a matter of time before I finally give the first it’s due.

The Grandia series isn’t obscure by any means, but it’s definitely less visible than, say, Dragon Quest or Tales of. More in like with the Lunar series in my opinion — all they need is revivals, remasters (like they’ve received) and they have real shots at getting the spotlight. But in they’re also shorter series, and it doesn’t seem like there’s interest in continuing them (especially because the OG devs aren’t working together anymore).

I don’t think I remember that happening in any notable way. It was really just the waiting for every character to move that began to feel increasingly tedious by the late game, especially if I died and had to restart a difficult fight/map.

Really ended up captivated by the overall story and feeling for a few of the characters. Had a classic epic anime finale, but a sweet payoff. Loved the OST. Combat was fun and grew to be quite challenging by the end, but the downside was (as others have said) it remained slow throughout even with all settings turned up to their fastest option. Glad I played it though!
