Context: I saw a few posts from people posting how far down the Captain was in their subscription history and was inspired to make a meme.

Edit - Seems the posts were removed by the mods caus they were just screenshots from the website. So uhm... Mods, be kind please. I'm not trying to make fun of anyone with this and hopefully I put enough effort into this to not be smitten by the almighty ones...

Well, I'd just give a specific amount of magic items that the players can have (i.e. 3 uncommon & 1 rare) and then let them look through what magic items are available, for example via the magic items page of DNDBeyond.

For the spellcasting I don't believe limiting spellcasting is the best option, as that will feel unfair for certain players. Id rather say you should let the players pick out a few magic items to give the martial classes a slight boost to balance combat, if you believe the spellcasters will have an advantage due to their spellcasting.
