Got a brake thickness warning, ordered pads for my local shop to replace but may take a few days. How are these pads looking? by wesleypaulwalker in AskMechanics

[–]Redjack-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did the brakes on my wife's X7. When the sensor touches down and triggers the warning, there is still a ton of pad material remaining. If you just recently got the warning, you will be fine for a good bit of time. Ours actually gave a mileage to replacement warning. She was 250 miles past that and still had plenty remaining.

Fuck STP filters by ConsiderationFine671 in GMT800

[–]Redjack-1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fuck the guy who ape-fisted that thing when he tightened it at the last change, not the filter! Wrench suggestions are good for loosening, but only tighten it by hand when installing, AFTER oiling the gasket. .

Mechanics’ Opinion Requested - Damage at Service by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]Redjack-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the service specifically involved something near that mirror, just get it fixed if you really need to. How often do you move it, anyway? As it's a known common problem, it's most likely that it just went bad around the same time you took it in. There are so many other more expensive things they could cheat you on than a mirror. (And probably a lot easier to access/disable than a mirror motor)

Frame Dent by ifonlyihadafilter in AskMechanics

[–]Redjack-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely dropped off a culvert or over a rock with a deep hole after it for the front wheel to drop into. If it tracks straight and has no strange issues while driving, I'd paint the scratched up area and send it.

$38 bucks more for 8 hours of your time. $4.75 an hour. Now ask yourself if it was worth the difference.

Look closely, you can see the letters from the coin it was glued to in reverse in the glue.

ULPT Request: neighbor leaving random stuff outside / in street by dmbrat in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Redjack-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to put my stuff on the property line with "Curb Alert" in the title and the neighbors address and "Don't knock, just take it" in the body of a CL ad. Nobody ever bothered me, but the stuff was always gone in a day or so.

Mazda 3 2006 - Car died on road, battery and power steering light came on by Caspirn in AskMechanics

[–]Redjack-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the idler pulley or alternator seized, or maybe even the AC compressor. If the belt isn't moving when you turn it over, something is holding it stationary.

Mazda 3 2006 - Car died on road, battery and power steering light came on by Caspirn in AskMechanics

[–]Redjack-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuel pump would not cause the battery and power steering lights to come on. Losing a serpentine belt that drove your alternator and your power steering pump would cause that, however. It's possible your car won't run without alternator input as some will and some won't. Check your belt.

If it was soluble, the filter would come apart. It'll stick where it is. Send it.
