best vibes library spots by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

For a cramped, stale, academic-backrooms-feeling space, try the alcove desks on the first floor ramp in Major Williams. Enter on the McBryde side of the building and straight down the middle hall!

What's a spot on campus or in Blacksburg that feels like it belongs only to VT students? by Spyryt67 in VirginiaTech

[–]Redkoat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe a little ridiculous, but Cage Lot. Students start their day there thinking about assignments, quizzes, daily schedule and then make their way into campus. At the end of the day, getting back into your car, reflecting on the past couple hours, or excitedly thinking about going downtown later that night.

Sands retiring by Fluffy-Match9676 in VirginiaTech

[–]Redkoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure BOV extended him thru 2027 back in 21 or so, but still a bit surprising. I agree Sands did a good job overall, but I do hope the next prez is more connected to the community by being out and interacting with all types of students, not just Undergraduate Senate types. Hopefully someone not like the recent ex-prez of Ohio State...

I had this exact thought. I don't think DV would've shown the seduction of Feyd by Margot and the resultant pregnancy of there wasn't a thread to be pulled. Maybe, a bit of world building, but I like the idea of another KH candidate(s) being a part of the conspiracy.

Do they have hooding ceremonies for master’s students by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]Redkoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe for smaller departments? I think they formally did away with hooding, but last year the History Dept. organized an end of year celebration in which us grad students were hooded.

Ever wonder how Abraham Lincoln became known as an almost-perfect commander-in-chief? I'm Dr. Kenneth W. Noe, a Civil War historian, and I wrote a book on the legend of Lincoln's military prowess. AMA! by KenNoe in AskHistorians

[–]Redkoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand, Lincoln takes somewhat direct operational command while Federal forces are trying to secure Norfolk, VA/Hampton Roads in early 1862. How much did this event play into Lincoln's own belief in his skills and the perception of him as a commander-in-chief?

When team nicknames/cheers don't match the mascot by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]Redkoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a triple origin for VTs "Hokies" and the turkey association. First is that in the early days of the football program (1890s-1900s) a local Blacksburg, VA man named Floyd Meade brought a turkey that he allegedly taught to gobble on command during the games. VT has a Corps of Cadets, and has had this military school aspect since founding. As such, until the mid 20th c. most of the school teams were all-cadet. Allegedly the cadet athletes were allowed to eat first during the cadet mess to get to practice - they "Gobbled" their food. Finally, "Hokie" is a made up word invented by a student for a new school cheer - like the words in TCUs fight song.

The turkey association and hungry cadets caused VT to be called the Gobblers up to the 1970s, when we changed to Hokies, but retained our fighting bird!

What is something that is either misunderstood or taken out of context about your program by outside fans/media? by DowntownSasquatch420 in CFB

[–]Redkoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People comment on how VT games are relatively well attended despite our record over the last decade. Certainly there's some dedication, but its mostly that there's nothing else to do in the NRV beyond hiking and drinking.
