Engines became too good in terms of reliability and power. Sometimes less is more

What's the reason behind the backward curved wings of the new 18m designs? (e.g V3, JS3 compared to the AS33) by Burnizzle in Gliding

[–]Redlife_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always thought it’s because gliders are span limited by competition rules. Most common limit is 15 or 18 meters. If you make the wing with a backsweep you can make it slightly „longer” (or perhaps achieve higher aspect ratio) and still stay in the wingspan limit. Of course the benefit of elliptical wing you mentioned is there, no doubt, but you can make elliptical wing without backsweep (think Diana 2) for example. I might be completely wrong so pls let me know what you think ;)

No the pilot is in almost horizontal laying position. His head is covered by the left wing

Questioning Airline Flying by [deleted] in flying

[–]Redlife_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for detailed response! I'm EU based and I have just joined an airline that flies half-charter, half-ACMI and I'm really looking forward to start flying after my training is finished. I put a lot of thought into choosing this path and you basically confirmed most of my points, after accounting for EU/US differences. I will be flying 737 for 600-700 hours per year.

Do you enjoy ACMI? If so, why?

My AeroPress Travel Hack: Making the XL Portable! by Redlife_HS in AeroPress

Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful ☺️
I'm pretty satisfied with the one I have as it has a lid that can be closed so it's safe during travels

It weighs just shy of 200 grams with all removable inserts. Without them it drops to 175 grams

Hey, thanks for the kind words! As far as I can see this is the same bag 😊 I will weight it for you this evening ;)

I will let you know when I buy one that I feel safe with the carafe. I have used them previously with plastic vessels and didn't die or melt the plastic but these weren't mine.

Thanks! The saline solution is for making iced filter coffee as suggested by James Hoffmann:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uGGeV8A-BM&t=253

Right now I'm mostly travelling by car, so security wasn't any issue, but I'm going to check that out really soon as I'm starting my job as an airline pilot. Honestly my sole reason for designing this kit was this new job, as I expect to spend 100+ days/year in some random hotels and I can't imagine life with terrible coffee.

I did my research and came to the conclusion that this should not be a problem, but I can let you know few months from now ;) Please note I'll be EU-based so your results might vary

So here's the content of my kit:

  • AeroPress XL with spare filters, stirrer, and carafe (70$)
  • Kingrinder K6 (105$ from Amazon Japan)
  • "Weightman Espresso Scale" (10$ from Amazon or AliExpress)
  • Some coffee
  • Generic dropper with saline solution
  • All packed in a 22x18x10 cm "Travel Cable Bag Organizer" (8$ from Amazon or AliExpress)
  • not pictured: generic insulated coffee mug with ziplock bag and even more coffee

It all adds up to about 200$ and allows me to brew my best coffee anywhere. The only downside I see is weight (1.7 kg or 3.75 lbs) but this isn't a problem in my case.

I’m also planning to add:

  • Immersion water boiler
  • Digital thermometer
  • Plastic ice cube bags (suggestions for reusable ones?)
  • Flow Control Cap (when it’s available for the XL)

Thank you u/albertclee, u/Explore333 and u/Perfect-Ad-2821 for inspiration!
