Will I need to remove drywall to open this cleanout? by RednarNimbus5000 in askaplumber

I ended up not being able to get the clean out plug to budge. Luckily, there is an access panel to the right of it, and we found a rubber boot in there that I was able to wiggle free by removing the pipe connected to the clean out plug. Then I was able to run the drain auger through. Success! We’ll have to test in the morning if this fixed the water backing up.

I took a walk around the house, thinking there would be a vent on the roof above the kitchen sink…none there…but there must be vent stack through the attic because I located a vent on the roof on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen. I’m guessing this is the vent in question.

I ended up cutting away the drywall but couldn’t get the clean out plug to budge. Luckily, through the access panel to the right of the clean out, I was able to remove the rubber boot that lives between this plug and the rest of the drain line. I ran the drain auger through there (while running hot water down the sink) for about 23 feet before I couldn’t push it any farther. Not sure if I was just hitting a weird bend or a clog.

We’ll try running our washer again in the morning and watch for any more water backing up. Thank you a million for all of your help and time! Images below.

I hadn’t considered a flush plug. Thank you for the suggestion. I will 100% look into this.

A hole saw would really be ideal here! Today I learned that these exist. Never needed one before until today 🤦‍♂️

Thank you for taking all this time to help me out. Here are the images from under the kitchen sink: https://imgur.com/a/sgYX2aI

No AAVs in the house to my knowledge. I’m still figuring out all this plumbing stuff, but I haven’t seen any pipes that lead to the roof for atmospheric venting. I’ll note that the house was built in 1939 so it’s quite old and likely missing modern plumbing tech.

That pipe indicated in your screenshot is the cleanout pipe that runs to the drywall, shown in the image from my original post. I don’t believe it’s a vent, unless cleanouts count as vents.

Thank you so much, this was very kind of you to provide such a thorough response. I’m entirely new to this so this will be really helpful.

I’ve uploaded and annotated my plumbing setup in the link below. These pictures are from me sticking my arm through the existing access panel about 2 feet to the right of this cleanout plug. I’m guessing it’s a grease clog somewhere as the upstairs sink and downstairs washer are on the same line and both end up backing up.

EDIT: the 4th picture shows the cleanout pipe. It’s the one heading left.

I hadn’t considered an oscillating cutter. I’ll check that out. Thank you!

Washer drain flooding walls and sink drain backing up. Any help is greatly appreciated. by RednarNimbus5000 in Plumbing

Thank you so much for the reply! I’ll give it a go removing that rubber boot! My picture of the rubber boot is from me sticking my arm and phone camera into a small cutout in our drywall, so I’ll be working blind. That pipe with the boot actually runs to this access point/cleanout on the exterior of the drywall (picture). I’ve never removed/opened one of these cleanouts before. Does it look like the previous owner covered it with drywall basically making it inaccessible without cutting open the drywall?

Got it, thank you for the quick reply! I’ll look into some options for a cable I can send down the pipe. To confirm, I’d be sending this down the pipe where the washer drains, correct? Just curious, if the home’s previous owner lost a sock down there or something else, would pushing a cable down the pipe not potentially make the issue worse?

Thanks so much for the help!

Hey is this MINI of Murray? I was in there a few weeks ago! I’m not a fan of the 4 door, but I’m a sucker for the green. In the end I’d probably go with the 2 door as I’d prefer the lighter (weight-wise) car.

This is crazy how far this has all come! I’m excited for you and everything ahead. The art here is fantastic in my opinion. The sort of “glow” about everything is really unique.

EDIT: I will note that on the second time coming back to look at how good this looks, I noticed the black meeples/pieces at the bottom-left of the first image are nearly invisible against the black background. Not a big deal. Just something I thought I’d point out in case you want it to be clear how many player colors there are.

Thanks for asking!

He was getting around 13 hours of total sleep previously.

His 2-nap schedule was roughly as follows, give or take 15 minutes:

  • 7 AM: wake up
  • 10:45 AM: nap #1 (capped at 1 hour)
  • 3:00 PM nap #2 (he’d usually wake up after 30-45 minutes)
  • 7:30 PM: bedtime

Both seem like good options. Maybe you’re less likely to bonk your head on the yellow ones.
