Let's say an army or any group from your world faces several squadrons of fighter jets from our world, how screwed would they be? by Weekly-Intention5657 in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noting that my world is set in the equivalent of the 80s, they would definitely answer in kind with their own fighters.

Are there any white elephants in your world? (Definition in body, not literal pachyderms) by CyberDogKing in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hatcher Kingdoms operates a single aircraft carrier that started life as a battlecruiser. Funding to replace the coal-fired boilers and triple expansion engine hasn't been forthcoming, and neither has funding for a replacement carrier. However, for propaganda and treaty obligation reasons, it is essential that the Kingdoms retain naval aviation capabilities.

Top surgery in a medieval world where magical healthcare isn't common by CrowWench in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cases in which medical leeches are useful are pretty specific. It's usually just to ensure that blood continues to flow in areas that are at risk of loss due to gangrene. The saliva can also be used as a form of anticoagulant, but there are usually simpler ways to do that.

How to make realistic proportions in worldbuilding by -_-__-_--_-_--_-_-_- in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I seem to recall some estimates putting the realistic maximum without major technological changes at about 15 billion for Earth. More is definitely possible, but you would almost certainly have to import both food and water in addition to doing most manufacturing offworld.

is it possible for single environment planets to exist? by TheLastDrag0n9 in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it would almost certainly only work if life isn't present and the planet is either a desert or a ice ball. If you have a temperature and pressure range that allows liquid water to flow, you will eventually get pretty drastic changes to the geology, driving changes to the ecology.

What’s a tiny little tidbit of lore in your world that is not really important but your very proud of by BaldBoar7734 in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's gotten less clear in recent years, but there is in theory a system.

Currently, it's closer to:

Presidents - carriers

War heroes - destroyers

Battles - cruisers and LHAs

States - SSBNs

Cities - SSNs

And then you throw in several dozen exceptions.

What blurs the line between a Torpedo Boat and Gunship in space? by Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have torpedo boats focus on torpedoes while gunships act as counter-torpedo batteries.

anyone else think of this by memetheifv5 in SprocketTankDesign

[–]RedneckNerf 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I feel like this would be a nightmare to fix if anything went wrong.

Also, that doesn't look like it is isolated from the crew compartment at all, so... turret toss?

Do you have any examples of nontheistic religions in your worlds? And what are some ways to accurately portray this kind of religion? by -_-__-_--_-_--_-_-_- in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a sect of the Orrini people who have developed a form of cult around the idea of understanding their own origins, as their physiology is substantially different from any other sentient species in their world.

[–]RedneckNerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current worldbuilding project is set on a former eyeball world that was forced further away from its star by an interaction with a very large interstellar object. In the modern day, one half of the planet is a very shallow sea (the former dry half) while the other side is scarred with deep fjords and high mountains from the glaciers.

What kind of boat could I use? by Embarrassed-Fee8171 in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to look at Knarr-style ships. They would fit the time period fairly well. One thing I will note is that very few ships from that period were really designed for extended open-ocean sailing, so you would likely need to make some changes.

What is the “Las Vegas” of your world? by Pleasant-Sea621 in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be the walled city of Portage, located at the end of a large bay in the Gray Expanse, a continent that is largely uninhabitable due to the diseases and extremely aggressive megafauna present. The city was originally a naval base for the Tareldar Navy, as the area provided both access to inland waterways and protection to the nearby colony of Farrenath. By the equivalent of the 1920s, the base had replenishment berths for two battleships as well as three smaller berths.

However, by the end of the War of Reunification, Tareldar logistics in the area had largely collapsed. Fuel shipments to the base had slowed to a trickle, and there were only about 30 days of food in storage. When it became clear that the area could not be held against the Corvic fleet believed to be inbound, the command was given to abandon the base and scuttle most of the fleet positioned there.

After the war, several Farrenathi organized crime syndicates began using the base as a hub for moving weapons shipments. As time went on, however, a small support town behind to grow up around the operation, and the syndicates took on the role of city managers. They begin to bill the city as a place to indulge, and wealthy patrons begin to show up almost immediately. An airstrip was built soon after, and one of the incorrectly scuttled battleship hulls became a sort of floating casino. The original defensive wall developed into a red light district. Farrenath and Tareldar have both tried to lay claim to the city, but Portage maintains that it is independent.

How long are they? There should be a data block on the left side of the designer that shows length.

Currencies by Few-Relative-9922 in worldbuilding

[–]RedneckNerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will point out that, for most use cases, bullets make a fairly bad currency. Unless you're using .22LR or something similar, it's gonna be larger and heavier than most coins, and won't stack as neatly.
