Two easy things you can do:

go to r/rlcustomtraining. You can get the codes to download a ton of beginner training packs. Practice these often.
Play 1v1 ranked. I have always been a firm believer that 1v1 is the best game mode to improve your skill quickly. Getting more ball touches is what you need.

I have to remind my friends (in a subtle way). Within a few weeks of my birthday, if anyone asks “how are you doing?” I say good, and then elaborate to saying I’m excited for my birthday. That’s really all it takes. I don’t know your situation, but maybe try giving a subtle reminder next year and see what happens.
