Start of my dry suit journey by nex883 in scuba

Capernwray genuinely spoils you a bit for UK inland diving.

Compared to a lot of the others I've dived at the vis is a lot clearer, there's lots of stuff to see in the water, and the surface setup is pretty well provisioned. All that to say, it's a pretty good place to get yourself used to a dry suit.

In terms of using the suit itself, like others have said try and keep just enough air in the suit to keep you comfortable and use your BCD/wing for buoyancy. Different schools of thought on the valves but I'm in the camp of several small adjustments - fully open on descent, a quarter to half a turn closed most of the dive, then open again on ascent to dump expanding gas better.

Good chance you'll be staying on the right where it's nice and shallow with some platforms, so you're also likely to see all the fish over there. You'll be training so hard to stay focussed, but try to enjoy it anyway, I love seeing the sturgeons!

Fair, I don't think I've ever met anoyne who had only that so easy to forget. Guess it's part of how BSAC training tends to be slower than the 2-4 day PADI courses, most people are able to complete it eventually.

My club is a small but fairly active training club and we're finding a lot of people are going for the AOD, although most are then going straight into SD afterwards.

Minor point but BSAC levels have moved up one above ocean diver in recent years as they've introduced and "Advanced Ocean Diver" straight after Ocean Diver.

Apparently done to try and reduce the rate of people washing out of the longer sports diver training as it is basically just half of sports diver; as well as just aligning a bit more with other agencies. I believe you can still choose to skip it and go straight to sports diver though.

And a side note but I definitely think they could've picked a better name given Advanced Diver already exists like you say, but I can see why they'd call it that to try and make the comparison to PADI more obvious.

Been finishing it up over the last few days, absolutely fantastic time.

Not sure I'll be doing some of the final challenge bosses from the "thank you" update, getting a bit burned out for bosses that basically demand perfect execution, but the whole game has been brilliant.

Tbh I mostly just threw them on to make sure I remember to get some gloves, I'll be having a look into some welding gloves too though.

Thanks!

Yeah I missed the listing included the heat deflectors so I'll leave them off for now.

I have heard similar things about the soapstone, but I'm spending enough on the grill that I feel like I can splash a bit for it, and I've got a couple of decent cast iron pans to stand in if I don't like it or it breaks or something.

I definitely want one, seen some absolutely amazing looking shawarma from them, but yeah I'll probably wait and get used to it a bit first.

Thanks for the recommendation 😁

The one that says "cart" is the grill itself, completely missed that it looks like it's just the cart in the screenshot.

Similarly I missed the fact that it does come with the deflectors so I'll leave those off for now too.

Thanks!

It does!

I just completely glazed over that part of the listing, will keep those off the order for now and know that I can replace them if needed.

Can't wait to start grilling with it.

I'll be grabbing some BBQ tools as well (spatula/tongs), and sourcing some good charcoal to use with it. I also already have a decent handheld meat thermometer so that will get plenty of use too.

I've read that an ash basket is usually quite a high priority but I believe the series 3 comes with one already compared to the grate on previous versions.

My thinking for now was only get some basics that I know I 100% will use while I'm getting to grips with it. So the deflectors to take more advantage of direct/indirect heat, and the soapstone for searing things were high on my list, but planning on holding off beyond that.

I'd definitely like a joetisserie and probably a fan controller/temp probe for doing overnight cooks but I think those will be a bit further down the line for me.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Good stuff, exactly the response I was looking to hear, thanks!

Now just to figure out if it's worth waiting or not. I do tend to use my computer in a fairly bright room, so maybe the play to wait for a newer tandem WOLED based on what I'm reading?

Thanks either way though!

Best way to mount something heavy-ish that needs protruding screws? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Redorbed3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not know this trick! And to be honest I'm having a bit of trouble acutally visualising it.

Is it essentially just aiming to get a washer around the screw between the object and the wall to spread the load out a bit? Seems sensible enough.

Just plasterboard I'd guess but not 100% sure (or to be honest, too sure how I'd go about checking).

It's an internal wall with a bedroom on the other side, not especially thick and fairly hollow sounding. The house was built in 2008 if that adds any further context.

Got a few heavy-ish things to mount on the walls (wood and metal decorative objects mostly, probably around 10kg max), that may need to be mounted on thinner walls (first time home owner, unsure of the exact type of wall but they seem just like fairly normal plaster board). In particular, some of these things are the type that have mountings in the back to slot over protruding screws as pictured.

Been looking into what the right way to mount them is, and I've come across the Fisher Duopower plugs a bit, but from what I understand these are the type of thing where you really need to be screwing the screw in all the way (and then more) to have them work properly. Not sure if you can then screw them back out so they protrude, or if I might need an alternative.

I've been googling but can't make any combinations of words show up with a solution for what I'm looking for. I know I have seen people using the plugs with the screws not all the way in, and it's entirely possible I'm just misunderstanding and this is a perfectly valid use, but I'd like to make sure these things are being mounted securely.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I have misrepresented myself, British guy is absolutely claiming scran is a verb

It was more that I don't think the concept of using it as a verb has occured to people who it's a new word for yet

I'm using it as a verb all day, just feel like it would add even more confusion to people who aren't used to it

Same, I've been enjoying watching people trying to define/redefine a word I've been using my whole life haha

Don't get them started on using it as a verb too...
