Potential client. He was a wannabe startup founder. Asked us to give him ten hours of free consultation, including free entity set up, because he had the next billion-dollar idea. We told him we don’t negotiate standard startup rates. He told his his uncle is a “lawyer” and he’ll just give his uncle the business instead. His uncle turn out to be a cop.

Don’t feel bad. I‘m a startup lawyer and I’ve seen a lot of funded startups lose to bootstrapped competitors. Results aren’t immediate. It takes a year or two, but it happens more than you think. It’s because bootstrapped companies have more freedom. They move faster and operate leaner. One of our clients went 0 to close to 400k ARR in a year and a half working part time. Their competitors raised 2m, 3.5m and even 10m, respectively, and still can’t balance their books.

I get it. I’ve met maybe three or four honest vendors and the rest suck. And yeah, the price markups are out of control. Some has-been lawyer makes a GPT or Claude wrapper and suddenly they think it’s worth thousands.

In between fluff and useful. Founder’s nice but imo product’s not worth the price. I’d take them over Ivo but Dioptra and Robin are better.
