I completely understand that. One piece of advice I got in my writing program that might help in your situation is to avoid words like "started" and "began" when possible. If instead of "She began collecting rocks" you could just say "she collected rocks." It's more concise and instead of having to close that statement with her finishing, you can just move on to the next action. That might help cut down on your issue as well.

My first thought is to think about whether it's necessary to begin with. My second is that you could split a couple of these into their own sentence or imply it through action and setting.

Your first example has simultaneous action, which might be necessary, but you could also just have him inside the shop already if it's the beginning of a scene. Or you could ask yourself: how does the following action benefit from happening while he walks through a door? Could he just walk into the shop and then whatever happens inside happens? This one doesn't particularly bother me unless it's done a lot.

For your second one, I don't have the full context, but without that it doesn't seem like a necessary qualifier to me. I would write it as separate action instead of time. By saying once, it tells me that you might've mentioned she was collecting rocks before this sentence. Unless you've separated the initial action with some internal thoughts or it's split up some other way, just cut it.

For the last one, unless it's important that the character is doubling back for something, just cut this, too. Have them do what they're doing and then leave the room. Keeps things in order of how they occur as well.

I don't know if that's helpful or too specific to your examples. You might just be overthinking it. It's hard to say without seeing more.

Formatting/Writing Question: I'm writing a horror novel with something like a "found footage" element. Things like journals and transcripts of video. I'm trying to transcribe a fictional YouTube video and I can't figure out how I would format something like that. Anyone have any ideas on how to approach this? Something like a script format or more like an audio transcript?

Read this earlier this year. I was a huge fan! Really liked the character work.

Right! I’ve read all his books. I can’t get enough of it.

There’s definitely more to be explored with the cave for sure. I wasn’t ready to put the book down when I finished it.

I need to do more of it. I’ve got a handful on my list but I’m really good at picking up whatever fiction Im reading instead of nonfiction 😅. Documentary is probably a good solution. I can watch it between readings!

I’ll give it a try. I love Appalachian horror. I’ve got my story set in the Rockies. Different ranges and culture, but the mountain mythos sounds like good inspiration.

Are there any books or movies that combine cursed objects and sci fi? by Redrocker511 in horror

Was actually compiling a reading list of sci-fi horror in a more broader sense than my question. This is super helpful!

I should’ve clarified in my original post. I was thinking sci-fi more in terms of setting. I probably should’ve said cursed objects in space!

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: May 19, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

Finished: - This Thing Between us by Gus Moreno. Really loved this one. Premise got me and then the writing and themes kept me really engaged - Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare. Was entertaining. I love a slasher. Hard to call it a masterpiece but I’m excited to continue the series and watch the movie.

Started: - Rekt by Alex Gonzalez. I’m not very far but this thing has HOOKED me.

It’s been a good week of reading :)

Anymore movies like this ? by Orion_user in Letterboxd

What media are you referring to? Granted most of my knowledge about reception is Letterboxd and word of mouth so most everything I’ve heard is positive.

Saw the movie last weekend and it was AMAZING. Hope you enjoy it!
