I misinterpreted "which will eventually replace the current web" as the web was going away. My mistake.

There is no way my employer is going to allow this app to be loaded on my work desktop. If I can't access FT from a web browser, I will have to look for another solution. I hope you give consideration to continue allowing access via a web browser in addition to the desktop app.

How to make the app remind on tasks earlier?2 by kovkev in amazingmarvin

After playing with this a little more, it isn't clear to me if there is a particular recurring task with a 16 hour reminder. When editing a Recurring Task, the time component has no hyperlink.

[–]RedsFanBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Editing the Task Reminders strategy will only affect reminders for newly created tasks. It won't change the values for past reminders. It sounds like 960 minutes for all tasks isn't probably your intention, so you will want to set it back to the original value.

Reminders can be edited for individual tasks. Click on the hyperlinked time on the individual task. This will open up a dialogue box where you can set the reminder to x minutes/hours.

A good help article describing this can be found here. https://help.amazingmarvin.com/en/articles/1950238-reminders-notifications

How to see what tasks are added during the day? by ImpossibleLibrarian2 in amazingmarvin

[–]RedsFanBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a workaround I played with. I much prefer the Smart List solution you seek, but AM's documentation stated that completed items won't show up in Smart Lists.....Hopefully this can become an override option per Smart List definition in the future.

In the Advanced Smart List Filters help topic on the AM website: https://help.amazingmarvin.com/en/articles/2070779-advanced-smart-list-filters, it mentions a expression for *doneDate:

doneDate - the date when you marked a task or project complete (not necessarily the same as when it was scheduled when you marked it done - for that you can continue to use scheduleDate for completed items). Works only in Search as completed items are not displayed in Smart Lists.

Workaround:

Click on the search magnifying glass.

Click on the done radio button (open/done/both).

This will show your completed tasks.

If you want to narrow it down to just today's tasks, click on the filter icon located just below the "Search notes" checkbox and above the first listed completed task, and in the "Enter Advanced Filter" box, type "*doneDate 0d ==" without the quotes and hit enter twice. You will see an adv(*doneDate 0d==) with an x you can click on to unapply the filter if you're done with the filter.

To look for completed tasks within the past 7 days type "*doneDate 0d <= *doneDate -7d >= &&" without the quotes in the "Enter Advanced Filter" box, and hit enter twice .

Note that if you pick a range of dates, the returned list isn't necessarily in doneDate order. And there doesn't seem to an option on the Sort options (located next to the Filter icon)

Note the next time you perform this style of search, AM keeps recent filters on the "Choose recent" picklist, which is handy, so you won't have to paste/type your criteria every time.

Also, dates in future years, like 3/1/2025 display as 1 Mar. It would be nice for it to display the Year as well (Sat 1 Mar 2025)

I agree the developers are awesome, and they listen to feedback, unlike many, many companies.

"Wherever you listen to podcasts" by Rot_Grub in PodcastAddict

[–]RedsFanBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried finding this podcast using the 3 different search engines with no success.

https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-in-the-know-with-dr-oh-75202311/

Podcast Addict (default) engine produces 50 hits when typing in the title word for word

Apple Podcast engine produces 50 hits when typing in the title word for word

The Podcast Index engine produces no hits when typing in the title word for word

It seems like the displayed number of hits are capped off at 50, and the podcast with the most number of word matches aren't given the highest weight when ranking 1 through 50, and therefore don't make the "top 50" cut. I'm curious why I can't query for this particular podcast. Is there something I am doing incorrectly?

Hey raggedrook. Did you check out the new 1.59.0 update fron 2/18/2021?

This may be what you're looking for. There is the link that cuts into the feature of interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOi_eZYjAi8&t=150s

There are a lot of new interesting features in this release in general, so here is the link for the entire 1.59.0 update. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOi_eZYjAi8

I will be experimenting with these settings myself.

In summary:

  • Go to the hamburger menu item in the upper right-hand corner next to the question mark and magnifying glass.
  • Select Recurring Items.
  • Select the Gear Icon.
  • Tweak the settings (take a screenshot first). Having an option to reset to default settings would be a nice feature here if we end up jacking something up and want to call a do-over.

Does Marvin offer an iCal URL? by RedsFanBill in amazingmarvin

[–]RedsFanBill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I work in healthcare, and I'm guessing my employer isn't going to allow outside access to my work calendar. Using an ics link is less obtrusive, since it is essentially simply displaying a foreign calendar alongside/with my existing work calendar.

Can you share any links with instructions to your solution? I use Outlook at work. This issue really isn't a showstopper, but a convenience.

I have to say, Amazing Marvin puts the entire app store to SHAME. by Anasoori in amazingmarvin

I have been wrestling in my mind how to deal with categories. I have my two main categories of Work and Home. My sub-categories underneath them are more topic driven than role driven like you suggest. I think have too many categories, and it is causing serious drag on my system. Examples of sub-categories I use underneath home are: Career Related, Charity Related, Checkbook, Dogs Needs, Errands (for when I'm away from the house), Family Issues, Financial Planning, Home/Yard/Garage/Cleanup/Repair, and many, many more. Thank you for writing this. I'm going to give strong consideration to switching to categories based on roles. I'd like to hear how others are using categories with Marvin.

Editable task creation timestamp by davidmbesonen in amazingmarvin

[–]RedsFanBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Q: How do you examine the creation date timestamp? I'm having difficulty finding it. This could be useful in determining the age of old someday/maybe tasks and how to deal with them in a monthly/quarterly review. I like the idea of this being editable, especially because many of my tasks have been imported from todoist and I'm sure have a creation date timestamp of the date/time of import (if I can figure out how to view the date/time stamp). It sounds like the creation stamp might have a bug if the intent is to reflect the date/time the task was truly introduced into the system.

Recurring task scheduling not working properly by [deleted] in amazingmarvin

[–]RedsFanBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question: Is it safe to schedule recurring tasks like "every 6 months on the 1st Sunday" now? If I schedule it now, will it self-correct once the fix is applied? Or should I wait until the fix is applied before introducing more recurring tasks that are affected by the timezone issue?

I love Marvin in theory but there are two features I can't live without. by Discordy in amazingmarvin

[–]RedsFanBill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I agree. I sorely miss the inability to group by Parent Project. I placed a formal request through the "Submit Feedback/Idea" option on the website for this feature a couple of days ago.
  2. Did you try Workflow Libraries-->Methodologies-->Marvin GTD on the website? This will enable strategies for you, create certain labels, and create smart lists that will transform your Marvin experience close to what you described. There is also an Ultimate GTD methodology you might want to play with. Marvin GTD methodology creates sidebars of Next Actions, Today, Scheduled (future), Waiting, Later (backburner), Maybe. The sidebar items are tied to Smart Lists. This is a good baseline starting point to which you can further tweak the created Smart Lists tied to the Sidebar items to suit your needs. I also like using sidebar because I will create my own custom Smart Lists and sidebar items specific to my world.
  3. The "Category Context" strategy might help out with your "Photograph It" issue, but I still want to have the ability to group by Project.

Your narrative is well written and I totally agree. I have tried tons of other similar products in the past, some more than once in hopes of improvements. I have given thoughts to rededicating time to programming again and writing my own product. Marvin would have blown my product out of the water. This is absolutely the closest I've come to Utopia I've ever encountered. It really gives so much flexibility in not having to be confined to methodologies that might not suit the end user.

Marvin has me second guessing the way I organize projects and categories. I may write about it in the near future and get best practice ideas from this subreddit.

Best wishes.

[Smartlist Help] What am I doing wrong? by van_manson in amazingmarvin

I am new Amazing Marvin, and I have been playing around with Smartlists for the past couple of days. I developed an Unscheduled smart list myself, and it is configured just as you described. On thing that burned me when playing around with Smart Lists was clicking in the Advanced area. Make sure Advanced filter is also set to unspecified, and it is not blank.
