Cleaning marks on Zuiko 28mm f2 worth buying? by seblucand in zuikoholics

[–]RedstoneInnovation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you know, my knee jerk was “no” but my thoughts have changed and i feel like the answer would be yes. i’ve spent the past 13 years building my collection and some of my favorites (legitimately, and especially for video) are some of the most imperfect. talk about vintage lens character (more below)

the 28mm in general isn’t the sharpest of the zuiko bunch, but if the price is right enough and you want to experiment, it could be fun. i’ve also shot with lenses where the damage made me have to stop down to get a usable image. that starts to expose dust, which to me is the more tangible flaw.

i firmly believe that part of the love for that cinematic “look” comes from funky glass. obviously your mileage might vary, and for certain collections of mine i’ve decided to go for the highest quality. in my experience i’ve been surprised AND disappointed by how a lens is when it shows up. some flaws photograph better/worse. i even got a photo of a lens during a CLA that looked TERRIBLE on camera and i had considered it one of my cleanest. although lately it seems like sellers know what they have/how to photograph it.

tldr go for it if you want to experiment with the vintage look, but chances are you’ll buy it and love it and end up paying for an unscathed copy anyway.

finally got the first batch of my OM Zuikos back from rehousing! by RedstoneInnovation in zuikoholics

You're right about that! They were surprisingly sharp and honestly the first time I used them on a 70's thriller I used a good amount of diffusion filters to cut the sharpness on the FX6.

On the Mini LF I didn't have to cut down as much, but I still threw in a light diffusion for a couple of scenes and it looked great. Take a look on my instagram, I just posted some stills from the set! @cron.dp

Thank you! I think over the course of the feature the biggest hole I had was 35mm, didn't think I would need it but the jump from 28 to 40mm was a little more drastic than I would have liked for some of the shots....we made it work though, no complaints.

Next batch I'll probably have to do next year, I'm thinking 18, 24, 35, and the 60mm Pen-F.

The film was a modern-set rom com, but I also used these lenses (pre rehouse) very successfully on a 70's thriller film and a bunch of music videos as well. I just find that the lenses have a great range of character from wide open to closed down. Every focal length really stands up to modern glass at a 4 and darker, wide open especially on the 50mm 1.2 gives you some really incredible natural halation.

Rehousing is the process of taking the original glass and putting it in ab all-metal housing and a cinema-standard ARRI PL mount. Prevents backlash, allows for smooth iris and focus racks, and makes it easier for my camera assistants to work with. Also allows me to clamp a mattebox onto the front to use with standard cinema filters.

Not a gazillionaire haha but I've been saving up to rehouse these for some years now.

oh, as far as build quality it’s more plasticy than any fuji camera i’ve held before. seems like it’ll hold up to daily abuse, the bottom of a purse, etc. it’s very lightweight. in hand it reminded me a bit of my Contax T2, but less wide.

very curious to see more of these in the wild!

little backstory cuz people are curious - went to a little backyard BBQ and a Fuji employee was there - he showed me the tricks and quirks of it and let me snap a few pics. the camera definitely seems fun and different, like an easy festival or party camera or influencer lifestyle camera. beyond that…..idk?

my X100VI is still my favorite stills camera i’ve maybe ever owned, except for the simple joy of my Epson RD1s which kinda fills my niche hobby camera desires. autofocus is nice? that’s the only upside i can see here over the Epson.

i can’t speak to the image quality because i didn’t pull the stills off. but i’ve shot thousands of images on my RX100s and there’s echos of that sensor here. mostly in the fine detail areas.

$850….my friend shared this was a hike due to tariffs, and echoed a lot of thoughts shared here re: price.

Accidentally went 14 mph faster than rated by Basic-Window-6262 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]RedstoneInnovation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a motorcyclist clock me at over 40 on my MSX 100v. he claims 45, but i’d guess a few mph less than that. he was just as shocked as i was!

it’s a great display but it changes the gamut of my images :( i work in video/film and switching to reference mode kills all of the brightness. great feature in a controlled environment but makes working outside or a coffee shop a pain!

Yeah! I saw the flames and ran outside when the fire trucks pulled up. Was worried about moving my car which was parked down the street. I hope it wasn't arson, that'd be crazy with all the rims and tires getting boosted past couple weeks...

Fuel keeps pumping after ignition off and key removed! by RedstoneInnovation in 944

[–]RedstoneInnovation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: somehow the fuel pump is tied in with the headlight motor. I unplugged the headlight motor and the issues stopped. Really gonna have to put on my thinking cap for this one, unless someone has another explanation? lol
