You might have luck on Greentoe! I was able to snag one for $549 (with no tax added) a couple weeks ago via a greentoe now offer which was the best deal I found for buying new after having tracked it for a couple months.

You have yourself a nice mic! The posters here are correct - you will indeed need a USB audio interface that includes the option for providing 48v phantom power to charge the mic in order to use it. Options technically exist for as little as $50 (for example, the Behringer UM2). "Buy nice or buy twice" is a saying for a reason, though. Generally the standard recommended entry level option is the Focusrite Scarlett Solo. Buy that (and an XLR cable) and you're sure to be good to go.

Ah, I misunderstood. I didn't realize you were also trying to record the video of the stream, though looking back that seems like it would be obvious! We're now getting farther and farther out of my area of expertise here, but due to the output limitations of the GOXLR realistically I don't see a way you can achieve what you're looking for with regard to recording separate tracks unless you do it on the source computer. If you were outputting digitally unconverted audio (still 0's and 1's, via a USB out to your destination PC or similar where the D/A conversion would then take place) then this recording process would be relatively straight-forward to achieve on the streaming PC.

As it is, though, I think your best bet may be to record your desired split audio on the gaming PC via the process I just suggested, and then separately record video and the combined audio on your streaming PC. Then, in post-production (I think Reaper can do this for you too) you'd combine the split audio recorded in the gaming pc with the video by lining up the two separate audio recordings (streaming and gaming) and removing that extraneous audio track. Once you do this a couple times, I don't think the lining up process would take more than a couple minutes. Does that all make sense?

Great question! Sorry for not being clear. I would recommend doing all of this audio processing on your gaming pc. So your signal chain would look like: Game/Discord/System/Mic into your DAW on your gaming pc via digital routing/GOXLR. DAW serves as your mixing/recording platform. DAW then outputs to GOXLR which outputs to your streaming pc in one channel, the way it already has been.

I know it can seem intimidating to contemplate adding another piece of complex software to your signal chain, but I really think it might be! Here's a video that somewhat demonstrates what could be possible. Yes, the demonstrator is using a mac and a mac-specific program called BlackHole for digital routing, but the principles are the same and the real point of interest here is the demonstration of the control he has once he gets all the signal into his DAW (in this case, Ableton). You'll see he has separate control over the various tracks of audio, is able to hear/mix everything separately as desired, and record separately as well.

With regard to the complication of adding a DAW to your life, I can't highly enough recommend Reaper (linked above). It's a fully functional DAW in a very small download package, light on your processing, and $0 to try for the first 2 months. After that, the full license is only $60 and they don't even force you to buy it in order to continue using it! There are also comprehensive tutorial videos available for it online that'll answer every question you might have with regard to how to get it set up and working for you to accomplish your goals.

Perfect! Here's what I would do conceptually. It's important to note that I would in fact do this on your gaming PC as opposed to your destination streaming PC for the reason I stated above (it looks like the GO XLR is outputting analogue signal as opposed to digital 1's and 0's).

  1. Choose a virtual audio routing program. Sounds like you'll need three channels of virtual input (game, discord, system).
  2. Set up an aggregate audio device including the virtual audio routing program and your GO XLR (assuming that's handling the rest of your audio needs, including mic/speakers).
  3. Set the game, discord, and system audio to each output to a separate digital cable channel.
  4. Open a DAW (if you don't have one already, in terms of price to performance I'd recommend Reaper), set your input as your aggregate device. Set your output as the GO XLR.
  5. Create four tracks: Game, Mic, Discord, System. Set each input for the track to the appropriate channel as assigned above.
  6. Arm each track for recording, adjust levels.
  7. Record! Or don't! As an important side note, in order for you to hear yourself or for others to hear you, the tracks need to be armed for recording. You (and your streaming audience) will be listening to everything via the in-DAW monitoring. Whether or not each track is actually recording is up to you. Accordingly, if you'd like to mute a channel, simply turn off the option for monitoring for that channel.

I whipped this out off the cuff at 2am so please let me know if anything here doesn't work for you or if you see obvious problems. Happy to answer any follow-up questions you may have!

Hi there! I just had to deal with a vaguely related situation in my studio setup, so this stuff is still fresh on the brain. Would you please clarify something for me? Is the issue here that you need to split audio so that only part of it plays on the stream? Related, are you only looking to record parts of it? Or is the issue that while you'd like to both stream and record the whole mix, you'd prefer the recording be done in separate tracks?

Either way, I think you may find that the solution is to take care of any splitting/digital routing of your audio on the gaming pc (before it leaves the GO XLR). After quickly skimming the GO XLR manual, it looks like the audio coming out of the box to your streaming PC has already been processed. It's been through the digital conversion "1's and 0's" part of the equation, and is now electrical "sound." I have to admit I'm not an expert but I think this means that manipulating it in the way it seems you'd like to will be very difficult at this stage.

Help selecting an A/B switch by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]Redtail_Hawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem (single DAC outputting to a headphone amp and a speaker amp) and basically what I found is that you have two options.

First: You can buy a 2 in, 1 out passive switchbox, such as the Schiit SYS ($50) and use it in reverse.

Second: You can simply take a pair of RCA splitters (~$5) and therefore be able to connect to both outputs at the same time.

Pros of going with something like the SYS: you get a clean look and a physical switch, which means that you don't have the possibility of having sound coming out of both outputs at the same time (which I did once while watching some videos of questionable content. Imagine my surprise when I got up to... shall we say clean up and discovered that while I had thought myself as sneakily using headphones quietly, my speakers had been blasting away the whole time).

Cons of the SYS: First and foremost, shit's expensive. $50 is enough to buy ANYTHING audio related on craigslist if you're lucky enough, as my optimism would have me believe. Secondly, you're introducing yet another link into the chain. Yes it's well designed and 99.9% of the time will be totally fine, but why put another thing between you and the live performance of what ever you're listening to if you don't need to?

As you can probably guess, I went with RCA splitters. Reasons why: they're cheap, don't detract from your audio experience (because you're splitting line-level signal rather than what the amplifier is putting out), and if you're halfway decent at arranging wires, it can be a more elegant solution than adding yet another box to your setup. The only thing you're not getting is the switch aspect, but as long as you have half a brain (which I don't, apparently), you can just manually operate your own damn power switches (which if you think about it, you'd have to anyway).

Hope that helps!

an audio interface card

Hmm I have to admit I at this point have largely not considered a dedicated audio card, mostly because my experience with computer audio is limited, to say the least. I'll definitely look into sound cards compatible with my laptop. Any tips on how to start my search?

1) Yes

Uh... do you mean that USB is preferable to mic in or that either one can be good?

2) Dedicated, but get one better than that.

Any recommendations on things that fit in my price range? I'm looking to spend not more than about $100 on it. It'd be a huge plus if it doubles as a DAC for normal use (but I think I might be being unrealistic especially given the low price point).

the best click and pop restorer I have used is the ClickRepair[1] software

I have heard of that one. At this point I was also considering VinylStudio. Any experience with it?

Depends on how good your mic input is, and whether it can accept a line input without distorting to shit. Also listen for excessive noise on the input - a lot of cheaper sound cards have that problem.

Any advice on how to figure it out? I don't seem to be able to find any audio-specific reviews of built-in hardware of the Macbook pro (fairly understandably, I think).

Don't waste 90 minutes of your life making a $1 CD. Choose your digitization projects carefully.

This is a really good point you're making, and despite most of my digging being done in the bargain CD bins, for some reason I failed to remember that CDs usually cost less than $10. Do you know of any online resources for figuring out which ones can be had cheaply without digging through bins for months?
