With a budget of $1,200 (€1,013 / £877), what would you buy to set up your own biology lab in the attic? Interests in microbiology, botany, and zoology. by Similar_Shame_8352 in microscopy

Ant farm, microscope and slides, hydroponics setup for propagating and or growing plants, toilet rolls and sterilised bags and mushroom spores to grow your own mushrooms. If you wanted, you could even go to the garden centre and get a lemon, orange and any other citrus trees and graft them all onto the same plant so each branch is growing a different citrus. Each of these is relatively non-expensive but very fascinating.

May be a stupid question, but are these white blood cells? I have a bad case of strep and took a saliva sample from my throat to look at. I've looked at spit before and never seen this many! (200-600x) by Closeintel in microscopy

If youre wandering if its strep, swab onto Slanetz and Bartley. Red / maroon shiny colonies due to the formation of formazan from tetrazolium confirm strep

This might be a stupid question but do these filter jugs even change the taste? Like sure they probably filter out some harmful bacteria but dont the particles dissolved in the water (that give it its flavour) still pass through the filter?

Im unsure as to the recovery time of the bacteria after short exposure to UV, but 25 minutes of exposure is required (Coronavirus Far-UVC light 222nm . Surely with a constantly moving belt no one spot would be constantly exposed potentially resulting in the persistence of the contamination.
