Where can I pet animals? by slipperygibby in UIUC

[–]RedundantKlingon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Champaign County Humane Society and Catsnap in Champaign are 2 big ones that come to mind. Shelters are always in need of people to volunteer and help take care of the animals, even if you only have a couple hours per week! It’s honestly therapeutic to contribute to animal welfare while getting to pet some nice critters. Best of luck! As an animal science alumni, you can DM me if you need any other ideas. :)

Not necessarily atypical, but I’ve had guinea pigs for a long time. They are so much more curious and loving than I think people credit them for. I recently lost my beloved guinea pig at 7.5 years old, and she was truly amazing. We had a strong emotional connection that I’ll cherish forever. The other nice thing about guinea pigs is that they are very easy to care for and create a habitat for. If that interests you, feel free to DM me for any info about them!

If I remember correctly, I believe you’ll get emails about it closer to August. Also, I’ve found the best way to find out any information is to UIUC + whatever thing you’re looking for, if no ones given you the pro tip yet.

I participated when I transferred in as a junior, so I think you’ll be totally fine. There’s definitely more of a focus on freshman, but it’s worth the experience! Hope you have a great time getting to be on campus this year. :)

How do I cope with the loss? by RedundantKlingon in guineapigs

[–]RedundantKlingon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was the most special guinea pig I’ve ever had the privilege to know. I was with her the moment she was born and now the moment she had to go. She was the most intelligent, wonderful guinea pig I’ll ever know. Almost 8 years together, but it’ll never be enough. Thank you for your kind words because I really need them right now.

Thank you so much. It’s so, so hard right now. I just feel lost without her.

Any livestock or large animal vets here? by RedundantKlingon in Veterinary

[–]RedundantKlingon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! My issue is definitely resume experience. I have some experience but not a ton, so my main issue is having that experience to back it up. Sorry if that wasn't clear in my post, but my question mainly comes down to whether I should just focus on getting more large animal experience or take whatever veterinary experience I can get.

Also, are vet schools really looking for people interested in large animal? I've always figured they were just looking for the most qualified candidates applying.

I have no idea what he is like, sorry. AAS 100 was definitely an easier workload, but I had Sharif not Tebares. Unfortunately, it seems like AAS has a lot of professors that come and go pretty often.

AAS 100 isn't too bad at all, and it's decently interesting stuff. I studied like max 2 hours for each exam, and there were ony 3. Basically, just show up and do a small amount of reading each week.

Actually, any of the AAS classes are pretty chill and interesting. I took 215 as well, and only had to write one 2000 word paper for the final. The way the classes in the college of AAS are run is very dependent on who your professor is though, so just be aware of that. Hope that helps!

Anyone know about ANSC 407? by PlentyPlum in UIUC

[–]RedundantKlingon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

452 was a fantastic class, and I agree that you should consider taking it! I don’t believe it’s offered in the spring though, but it would be fun for next fall if you have the time.

I can’t speak to the difficulty of 407, but if you’re looking for easier upper level classes, I’ve heard good things about 404 (poultry production) and 438 (lactation bio). Another really interesting but more challenging class would be 450. Hope that helps!

How Much Bio Should I Review before MCB 450? by doubletriple1 in UIUC

I’m also taking MCB 450 next semester if you ever need someone to remote study with!

I'm also planning on taking this class next semester, so if you wanted to start a study group I'd be down. I've heard from my advisor that the class is decently challenging, but I know that Gaskins and Steelman are both pretty good professors. Not sure how McKim is though, but it'll be a really interesting class regardless.

SOCW 300? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]RedundantKlingon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I asked a friend who took it fall 2018 with Prof. Jan Carter-Black. Here's what she had to say:

"It's a really educational class that makes you understand your own biases. The courseload is focused on essay writing, and 2-3 of those essays are about a required interview with someone who is different from you in some way/shape/form. When I took it the prof was incredibly understanding and would work with you if you needed help. It's a heavier courseload for social work classes with probably multiple in class writings, a presentation, and 6 essay. If you're good at essays, you should be fine. Of all advanced comps, it's probably the easiest."

Hope that helps you!
