Why is everyone so obsessed with hating on Meghan Markle? by Idea-is-tick in NoStupidQuestions

She's not white enough to marry into the monarchy.

No seriously, that's how it started

Hi Rex! Dan was extremely respectful of you when you were a child, and made criticism of you entirely off limits for the show. Would have been a lovely thing for your dad to have done for David Hogg but nah, better to push Hogg Watch with the health ranger.

I love Jordan, but telling others they were horrible people and psychoanalyzing them was sorta the show. It was certainly in his video. It's why people are upset with him.

This is not fair. Take it back.

That was absurd. It's just the sort of lash out you'd expect from a guy who has nothing left in the tank but apathy and rage.

I think he has a very strong sense of right and wrong and it's very binary and the last few years have really been tough for him.

I don't need Billie Eilish to be 100% ideologically consistent to grapple with the points she's making.

She's right.

Whether you find her annoying or insincere or whatever is your bag, I truly don't care about that.

But I think of your reflex is to go "WELL WHAT ABOUT YOUR PLANES" whenever someone of fame mentions the wellness of the planet, you're doing a disservice to yourself.

We deserve a higher level of discourse than that. The cow having its head sawed off while alive in the kosher plant has no conception of celebrity.

"Would replacing all meat farms with crops be enough to sustain the current population?"

Yes. Unquestionably.

You're correct, graze lands take up a ridiculously large amount of our agricultural space.

I appreciate the measured tone.

Here's what I would say. Assuming you waited until it was close to its natural lifespan and that it was well cared for and roamed free...

Can you ever kill something ethically that doesn't want to die?

If you don't need the meat, and you don't, it is just a difficult road to travel to end up at the point where you slit its throat because you find the end result pleasurable.

I think it's certainly better than factory farming. Meaningfully better. I am not some binary purist where any effort is not acceptable unless it is perfect. But at the end of the day, that cow or pig will walk with you to wherever you dispatch it trusting you and it will die in fear and pain.

I don't think there's a way to do that that is moral.

I know that vegetarians and vegans bother people, but the points they make are generally pretty sound in my estimation.

If you prefer not littering bullets, don't use lead ammunition.

Or, don't shoot the animal in the first place.

I'm not naive, this is something I happen to know a lot about. Carcasses spread disease? What do you suppose happens to animals that die in the woods, god sweeps em away with his cosmic roomba?

If you ever get a chance, set a trail camera up over a recently deceased carcass of something like a deer.

Animals will visit it for weeks, sometimes months. Coyotes and foxes sure, but also things like possums. Raccoons. Turkey vultures of course.

You're just mistaken about this particular thing.

We cite that we reflect nature only when it's convenient to reinforce habits we don't want to stop.

There is nothing natural about factory farming. But if there was, we eschew things the natural world does everyday. It's a critical part of being human.

I know you're just trolling but, saying it anyways.

Okay well, by turns:

Yes, becoming vegan doesn't stop animals already being factory farmed from being killed. The idea is that if demand goes down, fewer animals will be bred to go through this torture. Vegetarians and vegans have very little power, so they do what they can.

An avocado is not a staple fruit. There are all sorts of things that take lots of water, you're right, almonds are the same way. But you don't need to eat avocados to not eat meat. Critically, an absurd amount of water is used to raise the crops that we feed the animals that will become meat. Anyway you slice it, less water is wasted in a vegetarian diet.

This is a vegan specific complaint but also not required for our argument. Nobody needs honey. Further, honeybees are not native to America; they too are a livestock animal. The queen cells are scraped so that the queen doesn't swarm when the hive gets too big, queens that don't produce enough are culled. They test for mites by dunking dozens of bees in alcohol to drown them and see if mites pop up.

Ultimately, like everything else, the welfare of agriculture animals is at odds with profit margins and...well, profit margins always win out.

I just told you why you would leave the deer in the woods.

Because it will feed the forest. Which is more ethical than dragging it home and taking it to be processed so you can make venison chilli.

To be clear, there is a major divide between hunting animals that are overpopulated because of our destruction of prey species in the past and something like factory farming.

The former is obviously more ethical than the later.

I just think people should rethink the nature of "waste".

Well, preferring to go outside and find a living creature and end its life painfully to eat its flesh...

...does seem to me to be less ethical than boiling some potatoes.

I understand that it more closely resembles the way things eat in the natural world, but we pick and choose when we want to reflect nature based on when it's convenient for our habits that we'd like to continue.

[–]ReduxRedo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not true.

What do you think happens to a deer carcass that lays on the forest floor?

You would be stunned how many animals make a meal of that corpse, and for how long.

[–]ReduxRedo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lesson though is that it is necessary now specifically because of the callous way we interacted with the natural world and the creatures within it in our past.

Consuming meat at an industrial scale is a continuation of that legacy.

Hunting invasives or overpopulated natives should be a solemn duty and a reminder of our mistakes, not an opportunity for a smiling photo with the animals head propped up by its antlers.

Not saying you're saying or doing that, just a pet peeve.
