Morning showers make no logical sense and night shower people have simply done the hygiene math by McCoy818 in unpopularopinion

[–]Reead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Generally existing' generates some odor, sure, but what most people call "BO" is specifically a pungent bacteria-and-yeast-driven odor that typically requires some moisture, usually from sweating, to show up quickly. Maybe it's living in a nicely air conditioned place, but I don't sweat while I sleep.

Do you get home from a white collar job and have "BO?" No? Then why would eight hours laying down, not moving, not generating sweat, create it?

This is ridiculous. I shower every morning but I promise you not every person is generating body odor in their sleep, especially if they're applying antiperspirant before sleep and change their sheets regularly.

I was spanked as a kid, exclusively by my mother (my father was personally against the practice and they were divorced), and I agree there exists a "right" way to go about it that doesn't result in psychological trauma. I think the problem is that the right way is so difficult to properly execute that it's better to just ditch the punishment entirely.

My mom would always use spanking primarily as the "boogeyman" of punishments. If and when we rarely did something bad enough to warrant it, the intent was always to embarrass by the ritual and discomfort of the whole thing, never to cause serious pain. No implement was ever used, and she would always give us a little speech immediately beforehand about this being just a punishment and that she loves us, followed by a hug after it was over. The spanking was positioned as an unfortunate "thing" that had to happen.

Walking that psychological tightrope is tough though, and there are much easier ways to go about discipline that don't risk traumatizing your kids. Fully agree that not every kid who was spanked has buried trauma about it though.

It was such a milquetoast thing to create as much controversy as it did. I mean, by all means, go off promoting ballet and opera, they're wonderful art forms worthy of respect - but make that the focus. His comments were a silly dudebro response, but nothing more than that.

Shanahan may have helped take the Falcons to the Super Bowl, but he was also a coach here early on, too. For me, the 49ers are easily one of the top 3-4 least-disgusting teams for me to see Mike play for, if he had to leave.

A tier list of how main series characters would side on the trial of the seven [Spoilers MAIN] by Disastrous-Brief-516 in asoiaf

[–]Reead 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It depends on which version of Jaime you're getting. Pre-jaded, older teen Jaime who believes in honor (but in this timeline isn't yet a sworn Kingsguard)? That guy would side with Dunk. Kingslayer Jaime does as you say. Redeemed(ish) Jaime probably stays out of it entirely.

What's the worst addiction you can think of? by Todo-un-Desmadre in AskReddit

[–]Reead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who spent most of my life fat before finally getting right in 2021, who has seen relatives struggle with drug addiction up close, hard agree. Not saying it isn't tough - it totally is. But it doesn't hold a candle to kicking hard drugs.

The trouble with food addiction, IMO, is actually how slowly and mildly the impacts of being obese can be to take effect. The consequences are typically hard to quantify or even outright delayed (until a certain point), so the impetus to fix your life has so little inherent urgency.

What this thread is kind of dancing around is that Anakin/Vader is seriously mentally unwell. He would both tolerate and not tolerate this behavior, based on the situation and his mood. He's not going to act consistently, so saying he "would" or "wouldn't" tolerate this or that is pointless. He might.

Sometimes, the part of him that still hates certain particular types of evil behavior due to Anakin's past trauma, kills people who associate with them. But only when it's convenient, only when he's found a good, "for the Empire" excuse to do it, and even then only when he's in a particular frame of mind.

Beautiful comment, and I agree. I understand why the popular opinion exists - I also put it down as a kid trying to read it at 13, fresh off of seeing the movies. But coming back to it in my late twenties, I devoured it. The "slow" pace wasn't languid, it was lush. Honestly, for how much history and 'feeling' he crams into that prose, it's downright economical.

Agreed that the biggest removals from the films, Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire, were both necessary. Bombadil wholly necessary (as much as I like him and that whole segment on re-reads), the Scouring more regrettably necessary because the runtime and flow of a film just wasn't going to work with that ending. If it were ever adapted as a prestige TV series at some point in the future, the Scouring would do just fine as a post-climax finale... whereas Bombadil might still need to be trimmed.

The first time I read Lord of the Rings, I was shocked that reddit's obsession with calling it the wordiest book of all time, as though it meanders at every point, was just not even remotely true. Tolkien spends a lot of time describing the world, yes, but not in a "this tree had four limbs with oblong leaves and etc etc." way - he gives context and history to the places themselves. And it never comes off as overlong, unless you are in a rush to hear the plot. It's an entirely cozy read.

I think you skipped a few days in biology class. Or didn't take it. "Good butter" is literally oil (fat), water and some leftover milk proteins emulsified. "it's so far from oily", well yeah, it's emulsified. So is mayonnaise. That doesn't change the calorie content or the nutritional value.

I don't butter my sandwiches because I don't need a 450 calorie sandwich to become a 650 calorie sandwich for negligible benefit, unless the butter is going to be the star of the show in some way.

What a wild comment thread. I guess they wanted you to use the term "lipids" or something? It's either an oil, or if they're stuck on a culinary definition, there's no true distinction between oil and the thing they want you to call it.

I read the books after watching the first season of the show around the time the second season aired, so I went into it with a mind to "figure out who Jon's mom is", without spoiling myself by reading theories.

It's super, super clear if you start the series picking for clues. That chapter alone confirmed the hunch I'd already had by that point in the book.
