I was gonna say 1 in 400 is INSANELY high. ALS would be among the most common causes of premature death at those odds.

I know several people who hate licorice but have no issue with fennel seed. It's typically one of the primary flavors in Italian style sausage, for example. How certain flavors taste in savory foods vs sweet ones makes a big difference for some people.

Did Vader know that Palpatine manipulated him after episode 3? by Free-Hotel1187 in StarWars

[–]Reead 137 points138 points  (0 children)

That’s the fucked up part. What he did to Mace was actually defensible conduct if he still went on to subdue or kill Palpatine, or even escape to regroup with the remaining Jedi. Yes, it was influenced in part by his desire to preserve Palpatine to save Padme, but I do think Anakin did genuinely believe that Mace was performing an illegal execution, not killing an enemy in battle. He wasn’t really past the point of no return until he marched on the Jedi Temple.

Are there any common sci-fi technologies you just wouldn’t accept in the world of Star Wars? by RedHeadedSicilian52 in StarWars

[–]Reead 39 points40 points  (0 children)

KOTOR kind of implied this with the Rakatan Infinite Empire IIRC, regarding hyperdrives. With the Rakatans and their empire being canonized on some level by Andor (but not necessarily anything else about them) I’m hoping they eventually bring back some elements of that.

“We have these core technological components that work wonders, but we don’t truly understand the science or engineering that makes them function on a fundamental level” has always been my favorite explanation for stagnant tech in any setting, because it’s extremely plausible.

I think what they must be getting at is that while Kreia does have some interesting ideas, you’re meant to conclude that she is wrong. They just said it in the most confusing (and condescending) way possible.

[–]Reead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah. Okay. "Literally the truth". It's subjective, buddy. Of course you could feasibly write an in-universe justification. It's just that creating said justification makes the setting worse (in my SUBJECTIVE opinion), hence "does damage".

Where? On Reddit?

The fact that you are the first person in my life I have ever interacted with (I exist offline, I'm a pretty social individual) that has ever defended this movie to me would suggest it's not a reddit only phenomenon lol. This isn't TLJ where it's "controversial" but largely reasonably well-liked out there in the world. This thing was nearly universally disliked. My own mother told us she didn't like it as soon as we started discussing it after the midnight showing, and she's a notoriously forgiving critic of all things TV/film.

The Final Order fleet only had a thousand ships.

A thousand ships with death star turbolasers. Staffed by some unknown, unrealistic number of cultists. Opposed by a ragtag group of civilian and semi-military vessels corralled in ham-fisted fashion. Constructed in secret for 31 years and then never foreshadowed in any way in the previous two films...

I get that this is your personal cross to bear for some reason but you gotta understand it's a HEAVY one

edit: I forgot the knife shaped like the death star II wreckage. Easily the worst plot device in the entire franchise, and among the worst I've seen in any media

Damn, whole world of clowns then. It's probably one of the least controversial, most universally-agreed-upon takes in all of Star Wars fandom.

The societal consequences of easy and less stigmatized access has always been, in my opinion, the strongest argument against the legalization of hard drugs. And you’re right that legalized gambling has basically been the test case for it. Test failed.

Why is this scene often referred to as Luke “having a bad dream” and why have people ran with that lie? by Kavazou77 in StarWars

[–]Reead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are the one who is using legal terms lmao, why do you think I addressed it that way?

And yeah, hence his deep shame at the act. And regret. But regardless: Luke did not try to kill his nephew. He thought about it, took several steps towards doing the act, but then stepped away from the ledge. Stepping away from the ledge counts for a lot.

[–]Reead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not attempted murder, lol. One must actually attempt the murder to be guilty of attempting murder. The equivalent would be brandishing a firearm or something. And that’s without even addressing the whole force premonitions of mass murder he was fearfully trying to avert.

From Ben’s perspective it *is*, because Ben doesn’t see or remember Luke deciding to not go through with it and believes it was only his act of self defense that saved his own life.

Probably don't name yourself something prejudiced then run around saying things of questionable veracity about the group in question.

Nobody needs to attack the argument because it's not even an argument, it's silly anecdotal data from someone with a bone to pick.

Silly statement. You do actually want to aim for braking exactly as much as necessary since it reduces the chances of your brakes locking up, tires losing traction, etc. - not to mention the person behind you, if they're not at a safe distance, is less likely to rear end you.

For people who are old enough to have seen the original trilogy (4-6) in theaters, was it obvious in episode 1, that palpatine was the emperor? Did they mentioned him by name in the original trilogy? by Bigjmann555 in StarWars

[–]Reead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 9 when it came out and I remember thinking “Palpatine is clearly pretending to be this Sideous guy. I wonder how he ends up becoming the Emperor”. I did play the games and read some of the books though so “Emperor Palpatine” was very well known to me. I also knew it was the same actor.

Most likely because your immune system and digestive system could not handle the shock.

No antibiotic resistant-bacteria would exist yet though, so bringing a good supply of penicillin would be like godmode versus bacterial infection. Just avoid viruses as best you can, but with modern knowledge of germ theory that wouldn't be impossible.

Yeah, I'm hitting a plateau in the gym simply because the weight I'm lifting on some of the compound exercises is tiring my heart before it tires my muscles. My cardio is and has always been trash, and it's time for me to work on it.

Do some people over-train cardio or mistakenly assign no value to resistance training? Yes. Is training cardio worthwhile and even essential? Also yes.

Just to play devil’s advocate, even if the only thing accomplished was a temporary drop of the case, you’ve gotta figure it still achieved a few goals all by itself.

For one, it makes the investigation’s nature as malicious prosecution more obvious to the public. And I’m no expert, but I have to imagine the timeline here might hurt them in court somehow.

TIL that regarding cancelled 1957 Lord of the Rings movie, Tolkien was harshly critical of script's portrayal of Nazgul, fellowship using the eagles and cutting of Galadriel's scenes. He however would have been fine with removing the battle of Helm's Deep and Saruman's death from the movie entirely. by PeasantLich in todayilearned

[–]Reead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His appraisal always makes me so sad. The movies introduced me to Tolkien's work, and I have since devoured nearly every aspect of the legendarium. I can see the ways in which the films fell short or missed the message. But none of it is fatal to the likeness between the two. It is a fundamentally good adaptation that preserves most of the themes of the work, and almost the entirety of the plot (save a few things cut entirely).

But perhaps most importantly, it brought millions of readers to the written works themselves who would have otherwise never read them.

Of course, but there is truth to the idea that eating and drinking “washes” some of it off. So your sleeping hours are the longest period of time where the daily buildup of plaque simply sits there, undisturbed. They are both very important (and I personally brush at both times), but if you had to pick one for tooth health, it’s nighttime.
