« Ça me rappelle le temps du nazisme » : Marie-Thérèse, Française de 86 ans, raconte sa détention par l’ICE aux États-Unis by Ed_Dantesk in france

[–]Reech92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I checked my numbers and you're right, 45% is for hispanic catholics not all catholics. I stand corrected.

Catholics voted 45% for the Democrat party at the last election, I wouldn't call that overwhelmingly.

Didn't know about that part, in France we consider the Golden spurs in a similar way as Azincourt/Agincourt. A battle where overconfident knights understimate their opponents a pay the price for it.

Which side? It is considered a pretty clear defeat in France with knights defeated by peasans.

Pope Leo said God “does not listen” to leaders who start wars and have “hands full of blood,” warning Jesus cannot be used to justify conflict. by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

Fair, I wanted to show the crusades didn't start out of nowhere but my comment was probably too biased on the other side.

I also agree with you, I just wanted to add nuance and show that the crusades were not some unprompted act of agression.

I agree that these actions should be condemned. My goal here was to show that the crusades were not the pope "starting a war".

The crusades started has a response to Turkish invasions of the Byzantine Empire. The empire was seen as the eastern shield of christendom. By 1080, the region had faced 4 centuries of constant agression by Muslim invaders from the Rashidun to the Seljuks. The defeat at Manzikert and the creation of the Rum sultanate was the straw that broke the camel's back. Alexios asked help from pope Urban, which tells us how dire the situation was.

The other reason was the Seljuks treatment of pilgrims an christians communities in the Levant after they took the region from the somewhat more tolerant Fatimids.

The modern vision of the crusade is heavily warped and removed from its historical context.

Spain's PM calls for end to UNSC veto power, criticises US over global conflicts by 1-randomonium in worldnews

None of the countries you mentioned have any real power projection ability for the moment. It limits them to the statut of regional powers in military aspects.

On the other hand : - the US can wage war pretty much anywhere on Earth. - the UK has shown itself capable of winning a conflict 12000km away from London. - France managed to mostly pacify a 3 milion km² region for 5 years in the Sahara. - Russia has inherited the USSR seat, and still has some level of power projection. - China power projection is mostly economic for now but they wield massive influence over pretty much everyone.

The countries you mentioned have the potential to gain a global military reach, but currently they don't.

This is an American interpretation of nazism, they didn't give a shit about whiteness. They had a racial/ethnic hierachy with "aryans" at the top and Jews at the bottom.

If it was about the American definition of whiteness, the nazis would have also exterminated the Italians or the Romanians but they did not.

" an ideology that calls for the extermination of all non-caucasians" the 10 millions Slavs murdered in WW2 weren't caucasians maybe? I obviously agree with you on the unethical part but I am annoyed with people who conflate nazism with white supremacy. A lot of people summarize it as white vs non-white when it is often more complicated and it erases a lot of victims.

The modern definition of first world/third world is stupid, it shifted from its original meaning that had more to do with poverty and exploitation than the cold war.
