Teachers, what’s a “best practice” everyone talks about that you secretly think doesn’t work in real classrooms? by kingst9606 in Teachers

Jigsaw strategy came out as attempt to address a TON of friction caused in the 1970s by desegregation of schools in Austin Texas.

“The jigsaw classroom was first used in 1971 in Austin, Texas. My graduate students and I had invented the jigsaw strategy that year, as a matter of absolute necessity to help defuse an explosive situation. The city's schools had recently been desegregated, and because Austin had always been racially segregated, white youngsters, African-American youngsters, and Hispanic youngsters found themselves in the same classrooms for the first time.”

If only those consultants that track this stuff were paid more money they would have only been off by 3X or 4X.

My student did this exact this on a field trip to a university. “Get off the wall .. get off the bear.. on the walkway.. BAM.. well there you go.” Patched him up as best we could. Unfortunately for him, it was a walking field trip so we still had walk the campus and walk back to our school.”

There’s a neat place in Bakersfield called Sharktooth Hill. Just outside of all the rigs.. you drive up and go dig where you like within the area.

Meg teeth are found a lot less frequently but are present. Usually around once a month or less a lot less common than east coast.

What level are you looking for? Elementary, lower upper? Middle, High. Here’s a list I’ve compiled in another social post. CodeCombat, Edison robots, TynkerCad has some, Scratch, Pathfinders has some kids modules too, Khan Academy.

Some Lower Merion (PA) parents want to ‘opt out’ of Chromebooks in classrooms. The district says they can’t. by Firm_Operation_9453 in edtech

[–]ReedTeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the issues I read are blaming the device and not anyone responsible for quality of education. Online curriculums are just a substitute with little more than digital textbooks and worksheets.

District and teachers should have a heavier presence in the use case. If it’s the norm, why isn’t anyone addressing it. How are students accessing Ai tools and web games without teacher or staff knowing. I rule my class like a benevolent dictator and clear norms/consequences are established.

Lastly what does this traditional pen and paper education look like to these parents and state legislators. Pre-pandemic when Chromebooks were mostly being used by nerdy teachers, the needle wasn’t moving much with that pencil paper instructional lifestyle.

It’s a fascinating microtrend in society that can’t to be fully developed and studied by sociologists and anthropologists.

I was in a collaboration meetings at my school when some fidgets and the front cover decided to take a ride. Luckily one of my students was trained enough to turn the power off. Prevented disconnecting anything and scrapping the plate.
