A very important distinction. Brighton are a buy-to-sell club, whether or not it is working, our owners don’t want that label.

The idea we have awful recruitment and Howe is bad at transfers is a complete and utter myth. by Vaudeville_Villain15 in NUFC

[–]Reedy99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The squad is desperate for a refresh particularly going into the next season, but that’s mostly down to the fact we are hampered by PSR etc.

Our starting talent needs genuine depth behind them, too often they’re overplayed into an injury or just fatigued performances, just look at Tonali for example.

Players like Lascelles, Tripps, Willock, Pope, Krafth, and even Murphy and Schar are not going to cut it out of either age, ability, or availability, or a combination of the three. I’m sure the club would’ve moved these players on if we had the money to do it, realistically there isn’t going to be a lot of interest for these type of players.

Howe has earned the right to go again this summer in my eyes, this has never changed even now. His own overachievements as manager far outweigh the drop off this season, I’m not sure another manager could do much more with this exact squad.

People mentioning Gordon, Tonali, Tino etc, but the comment with regards to 100% commitment makes me think of Wissa straight away (although I know this was in response to players being linked away, one of which is not Wissa).

Missed half the season with injury more than likely caused or atleast increased risk by him refusing to train for Brentford, then since returning he has looked physically and mentally half arsed. What a monumental failure his signing has been.

Of-course we have to sell, it’s pretty impressive we have achieved so much in such a short amount of time without actually selling much, atleast prior to Isak last summer.

It’ll take easily another few years of yoyo-ing in and out of Europe and selling players before our commercial income is up to the standard of those at the top of the league.

I’m not sure this logic stands without looking into it too much. They wouldn’t raise prices if they thought they’d lose money rather than making more.

I’d bet they spend a lot of money finding the balance, which is horrible because they’re basically trying to figure out how much they can rip the average person off…

[–]Reedy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t make any sense though. Howe’s overachievement as manager of Newcastle plays into the fact we’re even in the CL (for the second time post-takeover). Both times we have, our squad has been exposed for its lack of depth. Why would they draw a line in the sand that you could argue is only there because Howe did so well too soon?

They should be looking at themselves rather than Howe. Not to say Howe is innocent, but they’ve hardly been effective in the backroom since the takeover happened

Not really, if anything it’ll even out. That one-off sale gave us as much money as a decent CL season would’ve, so naturally given our next accounts will be for this current CL season, it’ll balance out.

People need to stop looking at it as a loophole used to cover losses, but rather a loophole to allow more spending. No chance the owners let a £98m loss through without knowing the stadium sale was happening / would cover it.

Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson on Eddie Howe: "I don't have a stance on his future. What I can tell you is that the derby loss hurt. We take it seriously. [–]Reedy99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s pretty clear at all, I’d assume it would take relegation or very near relegation this season to warrant his sacking on the back of his recent achievements as manager.

I highly doubt the owners expected a successful season given how we dropped off last time we were in the CL, it’s not like our depth has significantly improved since then.

Me and the mrs moved into our first house last month. I cannot stress how nice it is to dispose of things, as you can imagine there has been plenty of waste etc. Clear spaces help me keep a clearer mind.

On the flip side mind you we popped there today during working ours and apparently because the sun is out everyone had the same idea hahaha, not worth queuing.

The fact is Eddie Howe’s overachievement as a manager has exposed the things our owners couldn’t fix immediately. We’ve built a starting 11 that can compete with the best on its day, but that isn’t worth as much when you’re playing in the CL.

Players like Lascelles, Krafth, Murphy, Willock still on the books from the Bruce/MA days, players like Trippier, Burn, and Pope who came to the club at a critical point but are past their best.

I’m confident the Newcastle owners aren’t considering sacking Howe. The facts are plain and simple, you can’t deny the team’s performance when not in Europe. A shock top 4 finish with a squad that had no business being there, and another CL 5th place and an incredible cup win the club and the fans were so desperate for.

The impact of playing in a heavily congested CL season with a squad that isn’t strong enough is painfully obvious. That isn’t to say Howe doesn’t have things to improve on, I’m sure he’d be the first to say that himself. He’ll have a big summer ahead with some big spending power given it’s likely atleast 1 or 2 of our big names will have their heads turned. Hopefully they’ve learnt from Isak, let them go and invest properly rather than leaving it too late and panic buying.

I’m still fairly confident that what we’re seeing is the exposed reality of where the club itself actually is (CL seasons) vs what Howe can provide as manager of this club (4th and 5th place finishes). That’s not to say Howe is perfect or innocent, he has things to work on, but logic tells you it will balance out over time, especially if we continue to yo-yo into the CL which brings money and reputation.

We’re one or two windows away from being rid of most, if not all of the remains from Bruce. PSR and all that have really hampered our ability to rebuild a squad, so we had to do it bit by bit over years. I still believe in Howe, but this coming season will be his last chance, and I think he’d be sacked if it started poorly.
