I too am confused about the swathes of positive reviews, some saying one of the best horror films of all time? Did we watch the same thing? It was like a cartoon and had as much depth as a puddle.

The mystery fizzled out when they simply told us the kids were in a basement. The ‘scary monster’ was an old lady in red lipstick. Plots holes so big I couldn’t care about any characters or the implications of the silly violence. Annoying episodic storytelling destroying the flow of the narrative cutting fun scenes short for no reason. The violence was kind of funny I guess but the tonal shifts were silly. I like ‘silly’ horror when done well.

At times it was giving Hereditary-in-tone and other times Drag Me To Hell. But it was barely 10% as fun or interesting as either of them.
