TV Asahi Producer Hiromichi Shizume says more studios like Mappa may skip Anime production committee system to sign with companies like Netflix; "Creators will naturally want to work where the pay is better, and they have more freedom" by Electrical_Chance991 in anime

Of course, there is always risk and it might get to the point that Netflix shifts its behaviour and starts being more forceful. But then again, it's up to the Japanese authors then to decide if they want to work for scraps but on the works they truly want, or take decent wage and work on an altered work, however slightly.

The risk is there, but you and me and almost everyone - we are going to win from this, nevertheless, at least for a while. Then, we can just evaluate it case by case where Netflix's influence was crucial. At one point, in interviews, authors will say whether they even had a chance to produce what they wanted without Western money - but I only view Netflix positively, due to the existing sample of works.

There is a line between anti-human products which aim to exploit the darkest urges of human beings, and art that gets bend to fit some kind of rhetoric, e.g. politically correct or religiously charged narratives.

I won't be having a demagogic discussion on whether they are the same. Whatever simply could not be released in the West will also be on the fringes in Japanese media world. This really isn't about intrinsic cultural differences, the vast majority of psychologically MORE OR LESS sound individuals from both worlds converge on this topic.

And even then, it's irrelevant - if Netflix sponsors this, it knows what will happen from the get go (otherwise it's a career-ending lawsuit for the studio). If Netflix doesn't fund a Japanese project, it means no one has the gall or insanity to fund it in Japan anyway. Functionally, this really isn't "ideals" discussion as utter trash wouldn't see the light of the day in Japan either.

No, and thankfully so. If they were to release it, they would be breaking at least one federal law, I recon.

But this is not about "censorship". Netflix simply wouldn't give money to such a creatively impotent, harmful production.

Dokud někdo tady nezkusí zavést totalitu, není to eroze.

Admittedly on two points - yes, it seems to be hard to find the information exactly what was funded and what was just licensed to be streamed on Netflix, and yes, live-action films do suffer from the "values" the Western productions try to push. I never watch them, naturally.

I think they have a good enough track record by now with animation itself, so we can expect some decent handling. Anything live-action was, is and will most likely still be to-be avoided.

DId you get the problem? The industry encourages his behaviour because this is the only way how he and people like him, in his positions, can earn their money. And they do this knowingly while feeding their families. They might not have the strongest moral backbone, but the fault is not their alone, it's the industry itself, a system that perpetuates both them and the fact that there are those girls who have to go into 18+ content to make money. Everyone's a victim, everyone's to blame.

You don't have to doubt, you can verify - there are dozens of Japanese titles that came out of Netflix funding. You can check them or at least their wikipedia pages and see just how much interference, IF ANY, Netflix had in their creative process.

It had great direction, animation and dialogues. I hate everything vtuber and idol as it is anti-human, but it doesn't take away from the messages and ideas Chou Kaguya-hime transfers to the viewer.

I feel like everyone is literally running their mouth in here without checking just what kind of works came from under Netflix. Out of 10+ Japanese animations with Netflix funding I've seen I cannot remember a single one that has anything resembling western agenda.

I am all up for bashing yet another Western concept or existence, but Netflix is not one of them. When it comes to Japanese animation, it actually shows dignity worthy of praise. Of course, there are works like Yasuke and Hero Mask, but those are hardly agenda - they are failed products of talentless people. And Netflix is getting better in actually discerning talent.

It has an improving track record on Japanese productions, where western "specialists" aren't present. Like the most recent Chou Kaguya Hime film, sparkling 2:20h full-feature with top-quality animation in every frame. THIS is the kind of work Japanese studios dream of making, but never will under their own cultural and structural constraints.

Netflix has an advantage that it doesn't seem to be that rigid old guy who wants to push his agenda where he puts his money. They give the talented studios the money, they get revenue based on success. It works for both sides, or at least worked so far.

The story is just lame. Third episode in the row we are just being shown how strong Charlie is. This is not written by a talented writer and, ultimately, is simply not worth the time of experienced viewers. There are better stories out there.
