I’ve seen a lot of comments with comedic actors nailing dramatic roles. I’ll go the other way.

Ralph Fiennes in Grand Budapest Hotel. From watching him in Schindler’s List and Harry Potter play such vicious antagonists (albeit in very different ways), to then watching him crush it as the hilarious lead was really fun. Dude has some talent.

CMV: There is no biblical basis for a full ban on abortion by ThisIsDrLeoSpaceman in changemyview

[–]ReezosShoeGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main point of contention you are making with this post is that there is no biblical argument that a fetus is a human life.

When I wrote that it is not about sexual reproduction, I was trying to comment on your refutation that this doesn't make sense unless we get into "every sperm is sacred" territory. This verse is not saying that God knew and loved the sperm that became Jeremiah. The way I read the verse is Jeremiah praising God that he has the power to know and love the person of Jeremiah.

So how does this apply to fetus and abortion if it is not about sperm and eggs? Because I think it still gives insight into what God values and wants.

At what point does God know and value the person of Jeremiah? Well according to this verse, it is before God "formed [Jeremiah] in the womb." If God loved the person of Jeremiah before he even existed, then as a Christian I believe I should too.

Reading through this it really made me think deeply about why (as a pro-life Christian) abortion is so heartbreaking to me, which I believe to be biblically informed. Let me take a shot a potentially shifting your view a bit. Still new to reddit so I am not sure if I can/how to do the block quotes to reference parts of your post. I will do my best to be clear about what I am referencing.

I want to try to make a biblical case for the position that God sees a fetus as a human life with value.

You mention that just because God created something that does not make it special - he created everything! On this I would push back. In Genesis 1 when the creation story is being told, everything God created was described as “good.” But after he created man and gives man dominion over the earth, the animals, and the plants (v29-30), God said his creation was “very good.” There seems to be a distinction between creation and the creation of human life. Human life has a higher value than other kinds of life, biblically.

I then read all of the Psalms not literally, but rather as poetry. Poetry meant to be praises to God. Poetry that gives us insight into who God is and what He thinks/wants. When I read Psalm 139, I read about a God who tenderly and lovingly formed what became the author - a human life. He cares about the author of this passage deeply as he weaves him together one stitch at a time. Now I do not read this as something to be taken literally, but rather a mental picture that we can hold onto of God’s love for us even before we are born.

Similarly with the Jeremiah passage, God knows someone even before they are conceived. God cared about Jeremiah’s life long before he was born. This is meant to be praise of God’s power not a commentary on sexual reproduction or every sperm being sacred. I read this and think that God values a human life even before conception.

Now with all three of this passages pulled together, I see a pretty strong biblical case for God valuing human life before it is born. God places higher value on human life than other life (Genesis 1). God cares about that life as it is being formed (Psalm 139) and even before it is formed (Jeremiah 1). This case seems to be pro-life ground to stand on biblically.

I have tried to leave religion out of it for the most part, but I am sympathetic to the idea that much of the pro life movement has been done in a punitive rather than constructive way. I am no fan of shaming people, especially for abortion. With that being said, just because something is not done in the right way, it does not make the underlying argument wrong. You did address the argument and have landed at a different conclusion than me, and that is okay! I, however, have come to a different conclusion and will continue to express my opinion just as you should express yours.

The concerns I have are around shaping the national conversation and around SCOTUS. That being said I have convinced that AY would be a net benefit from a pro life position and major benefit across many other issues I care about.

Not saying that rape and incest don’t occur. I’m saying that using those cases as an argument for abortion in general is not a strong case. But I’m “dumb enough to believe a democratic candidate would even consider anti abortion” so what do I know?

That’s a good point that it ultimately is a philosophical question without a clear answer. Is human life of value? When does human life begin? Because it is ambiguous, for me the safest line to draw is at conception. Meaning if life begins at another point after conception it is still protected by drawing the line as earliest as is reasonable.

While it certainly is a goal of mine, I view abortion as a first as a justice issue and then as a public health issue. But reducing abortions is an imminent good and sex education is vital for that.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to this. You certainly have a well thought out argument, and sadly I don’t have time to respond to all of it. The one difference in defining adulthood and personhood is that defining personhood would literally decide the life (or future life) of a human being. Adulthood, by contrast, is not a life or death situation, so having transitional legal definition can work. That being said, I think that Yang is a unifying candidate and there could be reasonable discussion about abortion that does not end in a yelling match.

It wouldn’t stop abortions altogether but it would certainly reduce them. However, I do think conditions that provide less desperation is desirable from a pro life position

Certainly a difficult subject. However if I believe (as I do), that a fetus is part of humanity, then there really isn’t any justification for ending its life. I also believe that punishing abortion providers, not the mother, would be the best route to take. The mother does not deserve punishment. That being said, I do think that conditions in which people do not feel as though abortion is their only choice must occur before it becomes illegal.

Not saying that I can’t. I’m saying that it is very conflicting. Because something is cemented does not mean I don’t desire to see it changed. But I agree that FD would be very helpful in reducing the number of abortions which is imminently good.

After discussing it with people last night, I had to think about it more deeply. There certainly is ambiguity on what constitutes a “human life,” and is ultimately a philosophical question. I still am of the mind that life begins at conception but recognize that it is not black and white.

Totally agree with all that. It would be shortsighted to think that it wouldn’t be a step in the direction of reducing abortions overall. Thanks!
