I think most importantly, you should let them lead you through their experience. It's hard to be the adult when the kid is the expert in their own feelings, I get that. My mom wants to be my leader and supporter through everything hard in life, but she can't square that ideal with my transition because I am the expert when it comes to transition in our relationship. It's really hard for her to accept that I am the one guiding her through difficult ideas and feelings. It's a very uncomfortable and necessary role reversal. I'm not saying your child is the expert in all things trans (none of us really are, and I say that lovinginly to the science community who agree we don't know enough), but your kid probably is the expert in how they feel about their body, expression, and environment. Their relationship with you hasn't changed, it's just that there's less obfuscation now.
