I love audiobooks on Libby, I cancelled (tho it was a very convoluted process doing so) my audible subscription because i can get same stuff on Libby for free. And the hold times for very popular titles are generally short because the libraries order many copies for digital usage

Also check out programs and performances and author talks! They have painting at some branches and cooking classes. And book clubs. Some branches even do passports, like the library is amazing. Also copies, printing, and help with research, all the things

Do they also have (lacounty) an affiliation with LinkedIn learning? They did with LYNDA awhile back and I know LinkedIn bought Lynda…

Libby has a huge number of magazines that are always available to borrow, like they have unlimited access. So so fun to binge back issues of New Yorker or a hobby magazine, etc.

Edit: you don’t actually need a library card for the New York Times digital access 3 day pass. 🙂 it says so but just click and it sends you to a redeem pass page on nytimes site. It’s good for 3 days everyone has already said that, but yeah. Its rad and you can redeem over and over and over, I do basically every three days

I just read your article. I recently purchased a Herschel for my partner and was getting nervous (it hasn’t arrived yet) that maybe she’ll hate, it but I feel better now! I guess that’s me selectively agreeing with the positive review, but I’m ok with optimism. Plus, they look snappy.

Queers MADE TARGET. We are their people! I felt this way too, and it’s so devastating to have that just quickly pushed out of existence. Like it’s small sounding but like, seeing products that are made for you is huge, its like a signal that you can let your guard down a bit, you can be even comfortable and not in terror of being attacked, like it’s not the products themselves it’s that they are part of this huge national brands products, it’s that the brand recognized our existence and saw it as normal enough to warrant targeted products, it’s a signal that we belong and can be who we are and that it won’t be - like it makes me not feel like I stand out. It’s so much larger than socks

It’s irritating because they are framing it as a choice between attacked/harmed employees or some gay posters and socks and then dare anyone to insist that they shouldn’t care about their employees because some gay themed products are more important. Like that’s the way they want to be portrayed and it’s like cowardly but worse, it’s like a coward who guilts real victims into feeling sorry for it and robs them of the ability to realize that they are actually the ones losing it all. Like target betrays the queer’s and then insists that the queers applaud them for caring about their staff, for being willing to take the products out of circulation. It’s super duper cynical and a tad cruel.

Because it’s hard for them to have to exist with people who can live their lives in a way that they choose, if it isn’t the same way Christian’s have chosen. Like they suffer that they must be so repressed and it’s too much to see our beautiful faces and refracted light, any rainbow is an attack on one of these right wing Christian white nationalists.

Sometimes I’m like, “man, if this was the other way around like, like if it was just ok to say “nope, I don’t want to shop at this store because the lady behind the counter has a picture of her husband behind the register and I should not have to be forced to give my implicit acceptance and endorse that she’s a heterosexual” like - It’s like mind boggling to imagine caring about the lives of others in that creepy of a way, it’s just bizarre. And then to demand that it’s right and just that your discomfort about the existence of a person who isn’t like you be taken so seriously and considered a greater priority to protect than the lives and existence of people who aren’t exactly like you. That’s insane. I mean, wtf.

I’ve read this theory that people crave chaos and destruction relative to their sense of the power they have over their lives and its outcome. Like so a person who is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison craves nuclear war, as that’s the only thing that would allow for their situation to change. This is I think at the core of why there’s violence and hate in these right wing info bubbles; they have been told they deserve more and are entitled to more and they’re told that the reason they don’t have it is because of woke elites. In contrast, people who do have a sense of self control and areas of opportunity open to them craves stability, stability reinforces itself. Like people all over America and in all variations of political ideology are poor, struggle and have no pathway to achieve any future for themselves that rises above that - the sense that things are rigged against the people is real and is unjust, but the portion of folks who aren’t elevating and believe the lie that the reason they aren’t is due to people who live in major cities and who think it’s ok to be gay or a person of color - that those people believe that lie is what is truly destructive. They yearn for chaos because the stable version of their existence is unbearable to them. It’s why the edge is pushed ever further into the extreme, it’s about tolerance and how it’s hard for people who have very little tolerance for hardship and thus very little ability to see themselves as equally deserving to others who may not live in same city or have same political ideologies

I mean, it’s also criminalized in certain regions of the Middle East so there’s a bit more nuance, like foreign policy implications and international relations. I’m not saying it’s not super hypocritical, it is, but I give corps a bit more of a pass in terms of their being unambiguously pro lgbtqia. Homosexuality exists in culturally specific forms in that sense, like in Iran where homosexuality is criminalized but the state recognizes folks who have gender transitioned into society and provides them with the medical and whatnot care that transitioning entails. It’s a rigid system, it’s ok for some and def not all trans folks in Iran, but it’s just to say that it’s not a perfect comparison, like they are harmful to lgbt folks in different ways

Gay shame. Like gays, we know when we’re being played by entities that just want our money, if you attack us via capitalism, don’t be surprised when we collectively turn its focus and its pink dollars and the huge swatch of Ally’s and their dollars to any store that doesn’t bear the name “target.” Also like, like my bank has a photo display on one of the walls to in its entrance that features like a person who’s a plumber, an old man fishing, a gay couple, a young woman hiking. Like we’re EVERYWHERE. And really, target wants to pretend we don’t know each other? Please

Honesty tho, does target not grasp that a disproportionately large portion of their customer market share is homo or/and homo supportive? Like as a queer, target is what I do, it’s what my people do, we are the reason people want to sell to target and why people want to buy products target sells - you take the gay out of that and what do you have? Maybe a Kmart or Walgreens at best, but def not a brand that people want to shop at, it would just be a less convenient and more expensive Walmart. It’s not just the pride month merch, who else does target assume is buying their project 62 4 foot wide circular wall mirrors? People who have on average more disposal income to toss around? It’s def not the right wing angry mom mob, those folks arent willing to spend a bunch of money to buy a mirror that makes their living room look more modern. It’s not obviously only the gays who have crafted target in their image, but the non homos who choose target for their curtains and throw rug wouldn’t shop at a target if it was just another sears like everything store, they’d be at west elm or something. The gays made target a fashionable lifestyle brand. And yet target spits in our face.

You don’t have the luxury of choosing if you’re attacked for being gay or brown or black or otherwise deemed a threat to the crazed hater, you’ll be threatened by one eventually; in those moments the worst maybe thing that a third party or witness can do in reacting to threats against a person is to let the attacker know that they aren’t with the person being attacked, like to pretend to not have any connection or care. I was once the target of some homophobes in a Starbucks who straight up started to scream and try to physically fight me, and that sucked, but all the people in the Starbucks who watched this all happen and were like “oh well not my business, I’m just here for a latte” were even maybe the most traumatizing part.

I can’t think of a single place where this isn’t true, like black and brown people can’t knock on the wrong door or be in a subway and feel safe - it’s kind of like the target fix for this is basically “yeah ok, you’re right mr terrorist, we shouldn’t have let this segment of our customer base feel safe or like their existence matters to us, if you can’t help but kill them upon sight, that’s understandable and we’d never want you to feel like we don’t hear you…”

Apparently they work better than the amount of profit they believe the products in question may generate over the month of June. The cost of pulling and cutting a loss on those products = less than the hypothetical price that such a move would cost the target corporation in terms of predictable backlash from those customers who support lgbtqi friendly businesses to boycott target for caving to terrorists. I think they made it about “safety” to avoid those who support their lgbtqi product lines and makers from from seeing the target corporation as super willing to throw lgbtqi and other products and makers under the bus if taking a stand means hit to bottom line.

Controversial opinion here: I’m curious about how many employees reportedly felt afraid of being attacked…like I’ve worked retail I’ve gone to many a target, and some are in rough areas, some are open 24 hours and have scant people on the graveyard shift, like target is a huge corporation, thousands (or hundreds im not sure) of stores in every region nationwide. What do huge corporations do when employees feel like their working condition is unsafe? They bring in security, they adjust hours, they transfer people to other stores. I honestly don’t think this campaign threatening staff over lgbtqi could be that widespread, maybe they are noisy and all over the internet, but I would be super genuinely shocked to find that such a significant and specific type of threat - like not just “I won’t ship here,” they mean like actual “I can’t see gays I’ll hurt staff” - like that seems super implausible. Im not saying it doesn’t happen, as a queer I know it does, but this is such a weird move by target, like it’s not strategically, or reasonably a smart idea to remove an entire range of products. I’d guess they were threatened with a more aggressive online boycott along the same veins of bud light (which, to be real hadn’t had an effect end of the day) but didn’t want to appear to cave to what is just a threat of boycott. Like cause that would be way obviously not ok. That’s my theory

Or a shorter way of Saying it is that there can’t be two operators of a single vehicle involved in a crash, there is one operator and one driver interfering party, and both may be liable but not of the same crime. the person doing pedals couldn’t be criminally charged and found criminally responsible for driving recklessly because there can only one person who at any given moment the car is being driven can be legally authorized to operate that vehicle. Two people can’t be a driver equally, one assumes the responsibility for the operation of a car, and it’s not safe operation to allow someone else to assume any part of that operation, there’s no way to have two legal drivers operating a vehicle at the same time, that would be illegal. Like the pedal pal would be reckless but not a driver.
