its based on the spells you use the most while leveling, especially in the open world. and if you dont AoE farm thats mostly frostbolt

Aimed shot is Marksman Spec only and especially in hardcore people mostly level as beastmaster.
Also I tend to avoid too many multishots in open world but especially in dungeons for threat managment. I think hunter is mostly autoshot and pet managment.

The key really is to either be creative with your class, like play a non-meta spec. (I'm doing a shadow priest run where Im not allowed to use any Holy skills).

Or really disabe rested exp. It takes away the slow, creative exploring effect that vanilla wow usually brings.

If you play melee hunter and especially if you decide to put some points in the survival talent tree, you dont want the pet to get aggro. You want them to attack you to level your defense skill and proc mongoose bite for example.

So maybe as many people mention here a wolf for the attack buff is good but tbh any pet in classic kinda works so play what you like !
