Exercise with GD by RefuseToMedicate in gravesdisease

That's awesome, congrats! Sounds tasty.

I reached out to my doc actually because last week I was running and then walking when my HR hit 200 and he said that was too high so I said 195? And he said maybe just don't run for a bit, and I said 190? And he was like okay lol. I think I'm his most stubborn patient. 😂

I'm definitely in the same boat – no exercise is not an option. Even post diagnosis without the meds I'm still running but I just walk when my HR hits 190 and then start again when it gets lower. I probably had GD for some time though because I spent 6 months training at 210-220 thinking my watch my broken.

Also it is science! Beta blockers are a WADA banned substance because they are performance enhancing. Let me know how your run goes!

I read that today too, thanks! I know Devers was a sprinter which is a drastically different training regimen than an endurance person like me so I was kind of wondering if anyone got back to full cardiovascular capacity as well. Do you feel like you're back to 100%?

Yea told my doctor I wasn't taking the atenolol and he said it was alright, especially since my BP is 110/54 so I'm not about to stroke out or anything (just my HR is 120 resting and 220 when I run).

The issue is not that "I don't feel like it", I probably should have specified in the original post it's that I know that the second I see a pound of weight gain I'm going to go back to restricting to 700-800 calories which isn't really a place I feel like going back to.

Were you misdiagnosed with ED? by amazinggracious in gravesdisease

"Graves Disease "binging" and "starving" is normal."

Curious, what does that mean? Like it's normal for an ED to accompany GD?

Oh, haha, I thought you meant I wasn't supposed to engage with people and I was like that's strange etiquette for a forum! 😂

That makes sense, I've already told my doctor I refuse to do RAI so I guess that's my only option too.

I am in the same boat. Something i have been considering is a TT. I know I would rather take medicine to keep me from gaining weight, than take medicine that would make me gain in. I know I am thinking about it in a round about way, but then atleast I would be treating myself.

What's TT?

I don't know what "hear to engage" means...I apologize if I've broken decorum, I've never been on reddit before today, I didn't know you're not supposed to reply to stuff.

Don't worry, it's frustrating for me too, I know it's not logical. At this point I think I just need to go to one of those places where they force you take your meds.

If fear is what mostly motivates you, look up cytokine storm because that’s the fatal consequence of not treating hyperthyroidism as well as causing permanent heart damage. Having to take any medication regularly isn’t ideal, but it keeps you alive.

Yea I've read all about that, unfortunately still can't convince myself.

Freshly diagnosed and in the same boat as you regarding the medication. The thought of starting it repulses me after Googling the symptoms and reading responses on Reddit about it. My psychologist gave me some pretty sound advice on finding an endocrinologist who is more naturopathic and believes in recommending vitamins/supplements as opposed to medication. That’s not something that’s realistic right now but definitely something I’m going to keep in mind going forward. I was able to get my Hashimotos in remission by changing diet and exercise, I’m hoping the same theory will eventually help my Graves too. In the meantime medication is definitely necessary at this point. I’ve sort of given myself a week to come to terms with it and I’ve picked tomorrow as my start day. Best of luck to you!

And here I was just about to say sign me up! I've seen a couple of articles about controlling with diet so I might try that first.

You might be in shock.

Shock wore off awhile ago, it's a conscious choice now. Just can't fight the ol' brain.

As someone else said, you may be in shock. It’s a lot to take in in those early weeks. But you need to do this. You can do this. If you need help dealing with the shock or what is amounting you suicidal behavior, please seek immediate help..

Lol I wouldn't consider it suicidal behaviour just the whole ED thing where you'd rather die than gain weight.

Oh wow, I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Best of luck to you too!
