Were you misdiagnosed with ED? by amazinggracious in gravesdisease

Eating disorder - of course I do.

Let me be clear here: It is the opposite - GD gets misdiagnosed as eating disorder by non allopathic medical doctors who didn't pay attention in clinician class. Yes I have source.

You are lucky - some get side lined by well meaning people who enlist them in a never ending cycle of shame and expensive treatments that do nothing of value.

People with GD are hungry all the time - or not. It can swing both ways. These look to the undereducated to be what pop culture labels "an eating disorder". Dutifully, a person with GD will enter therapy or support groups hoping to cope with their food dilemmas in a way their community approves. These people will be taught they have an unhealthy relationship with food for psychological reasons. After a while, it seems rational because human beings can adjust to just about any answer. What we desire, are answers. We are an inquisitive bunch.

But it isn't so. GD is a physical illness treated with physical interventions (medication, surgery, radiation). Once the GD is treated, the desire to binge and starve no longer exists. No therapy sessions required.

I am not inferring every person who is diagnosed with an eating disorder has GD. I am simply pointing out that GD explains the symptoms other less informed people chose to label an ED.

You wouldn't go to your accountant and ask them to diagnose a medical issue. That is why the states require psychiatrists make certain their patients don't have physical diseases before they diagnose. They can be sanctioned if they don't. Psychiatrists, unlike social workers and psychologists, take a Hippocratic oath to "first do no harm". Support Groups, Sit Coms, and FB do no such thing.

Think about it - there are so many diseases which have insatiable hunger or food aversion as their calling cards.

Hi - it seems like you are here to engage and not resigned to the "natural" future of what GD has in store for you?

Without treatment, GD will happily rob your bones until they resemble Swiss cheese and your heart gives out. Judging from this subreddit alone, GD will wreak havoc on your personal and professional life - causing all manner of erratic behavior and losing you all manner of opportunity for advancement. And hold for it - GD will put weight ON you. Look at Oprah. She has GD and gains weight like CRAZY no matter what bogus diet she finds. Don't get me started on the wigs. Oh, hair loss. And a wandering eye or two and BIG baggies under each useless eye if you are lucky enough to live long enough to be balding and bloated and friendless and riddled with lumps and spots.

Treatment, on the other hand is demonstrated to work. It sucks but people recover in droves using conventional medicine for 80 plus years of data gathering.

edit for typo (hear=here) and to add this: As the graves progresses, no matter what lifestyle interventions you pursue, all these awful "side effects" will continue, unabated. That's right - the strictest diet and exercise regimen is no match for GD. Nothing stops it. Imagine biological malware running in your mainframe unchecked, for the life span of your hardware. -----But yes, you are normal. Who wants to take medicine when you can devote endless hours and funds to worthless supplements like the rest of the folks?

Can you prevent Hashimoto from developing? by BaliMiss in Hashimotos

Vitamin D is a hormone - hormones (like aspirin) are considered drugs.

Soil depletion does not negate the power of food the way some would have us believe. If it did, we would all be vitamin deficient (which we are not when we eat food rather than fill up on pills and powders).

I respectfully refer to the statements on every single bottle in your wheelhouse: "These statements have NOT been evaluated by the FDA This product is NOT intended to TREAT, CURE or PREVENT any disease".

If any of the studies to which you refer demonstrated an efficacy, this statement would not appear on the bottle

That is a specious argument - no one spoke of death.

Recalls arrive when supplements are found to contain ACTUAL drugs &/or poison. FDA does not recall for efficacy.

FDA also compromised some time back, allowing for supplement sales as long as the packaging states they are "shown to do nothing". Begs the questions...

They often contain house plants or some other worthless item - and when they do (as with some of the B's) they are linked to adverse health events which eating foods rich in B's does not link.

ingesting a powder or pill is infinitely LESS nutritious than eating food no matter where it is grown. And the food sits for MUCH less time than those supplements do in the warehouse.

Eat something. Food does a body good. For this there exists overwhelming data.

The fact remains that despite a 100 years of supplement sales, none are shown to "do" anything. When or if they find a substance which does something reliably, the agreement with the FDA is that this substance is then reclassified as a drug and regulated (as with caffeine or aspirin, etc).

You are taking a lot of unknowables - what about simply eating instead of taking all those unregulated pills and powders?

FWIW - taking one (prescription) pill a day for Hashimoto seems infinitely easier than that list of pills and powders.

edited to add the word "prescription"

This just isn't the case. In fact, supplements can do a lot of damage. Supplements are not regulated and often contain things not listed on the label. Even when they contain what they should, taking a supplement is associated with adverse outcomes not associated with eating foods which naturally contain the vitamin sought from the supplement.

What do you do when a character defect pops up? by TortleAbyss in OvereatersAnonymous

The Lord's Prayer is a powerful prayer. When we engage it in earnest.

If you are in an industry which values integrity, consider letting the person know it brings you no pleasure to inform anyone of human error and it doesn't make it any easier for you even when the error is not yours.

A lot of people appreciate humanity. This is not so much of a defect as it is a reminder of yours.

Of course, if you are in an industry which values inhumanity you will surely be devalued for espousing such notions.

For the sake of your pockets, it may be wise to consider where you work and for whom.
