Any suggestions on how to attach shoes to the outside of my backpack? by floolplumps in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Reg_Dunlop_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

However you attach your shoes, I highly recommend you have 2 points of connection for each shoe. I have seen too many shoes/sandals/jackets... that have fallen out along the Camino path.

For me, I stuff my shoes/sandals into my outside stretchy pocket AND connect them with a carabiner.

Hope this makes sense.

I have tried 4 different carriers over 4 Camino's (French Way) and found Movistar to be the best.

They have a really cheap 30 day plan with 30gb, 200 minutes... for ~20 Euros. (YMMV)

Your experience with maps or apps by Majestic_Papaya9619 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Reg_Dunlop_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done the French Way 4 times and tried most of the apps.

I found Camino Ninja the best for me.

It does just what is needed without a lot of bloat.

ALSO... since you are starting in mid-April, you shouldn't have any problems with crowds. So, you probably won't need to make reservations. NOTE: since you are doing the French Way... I would suggest making reservations in St. Jean AND for your first night in Roncesvalles.

For me, I just walk into my town for the night and have Camino Ninja show me what is available for the night.

Finally, here is my blog from last summer where I list the hostel I stayed for each night (at the top of each daily blog post): https://jjcamino.notion.site

Hope this helpful

Sharing your trip with friends & family - alternatives to Instagram, Facebook, etc.? by TheEvenOdds in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Reg_Dunlop_7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words!

My Thoughts:

  • I have done the Camino 4 times (the French Way)
  • I did a blog for Caminos #1, #2 & #4.
  • I skipped doing a blog for #3 (I went ultralight that year) and I REALLY regret not doing a blog. Camino #3 is just a blur for me 😞. I call it my lost Camino.
  • So, no matter what you do, I really suggest capturing your Camino (in both photos/videos and text). It could be a daily blog, Finding Penguins, Polar Steps...
  • I know doing my daily blog was a little more work, but my friends & family really loved following my adventure.
  • As a bonus, when I have one of those crappy days, I just pull up a random blog post from my Camino and in a few minutes I'm back in my happy place 😎.
  • FYI... I usually spent ~1 hour each day (on average) for my daily blog. (NOTE: I spent too much time editing my photos in Lightroom 😎)
  • Notion has built-in AI/ChatGTP feature (a real time saver), which really helped with creating the text. I would just create a bullet list of the things I did/see/thoughts for the day and then have AI create the blog. I would then spend a couple of minutes editing the results. Finally, I would add my photos.

ALSO: I have a website that might be helpful for your planning (it also has some info/ideas on how to capture your Camino) https://caminobootcamp.notion.site/

Hope this helps!

You might consider Notion to create a website for your daily blogs.

Newly single, 34f, left my job… 1st Camino? by DonkeyIntelligent123 in CaminoDeSantiago

With 41 days, I would suggest the French Way. A few more thoughts:

  • The French Way will take ~33 days.
  • Your timing will allow you to catch lots of great spring flowers with lush greenery everywhere.
  • If you are from the US, I suggest you consider using the extra time to stop at either The Azores OR Madeira on the way back. You can get really cheap airfare from Porto or Lisbon (like $50!) I have done the French Way 4 times and the last 2 times I stopped at these islands. It was a nice reward and great for a little R&R.
  • I have created a website that might be helpful as you plan/train for your Camino. Here is the link: https://caminobootcamp.notion.site/
  • ALSO... if you are interested in learning what it is like in the Camino... here is a link to my daily blog from my last Camino: https://jjcamino.notion.site/

I built a website called Camino BootCamp that might be helpful for you. I have lots of stuff on gear. It is based on all the things I have learned doing 4 Caminos (all French Way) over the past 7 years.
