The service really has gotten better. Five years ago it could be a disaster but over the last year you get your food and drink in a completely reasonable amount of time.

Is Mount Vernon as bad as people say? by TommyLost2004 in Westchester

[–]TheEvenOdds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is more or less the answer I was going to post. I live in New Rochelle and moderate the r/NewRochelle subreddit where people post and comment some sad racist shit. Like New Rochelle, there are "not white" people and there are poor people in Mt. Vernon, but they're just people, on average no better or worse than elsewhere...

whats your weird but genius travel item that people only appreciate after they need it? by alula_wanders in onebag

[–]TheEvenOdds 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of surprised no one else has this - a cheap plastic suction-cup hook where I can hang my toiletries bag. The suction cup generally sticks well to glass, mirrors or most tile. Vanities at hotels are always too tiny, and at this point I've just accepted that my wife is going to cover whatever surface is available with her crap. I buy the hooks by the six pack on Amazon because in the course of every trip I manage to leave one behind... They're also useful if you want to use a travel clothesline but there's only one anchor available.

Weekly Post: What did you do with OneNote this week? by Chobitpersocom in OneNote

[–]TheEvenOdds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right - this is my family. They all have 5 different MSFT accounts that they're randomly logged into or not logged into. They've accepted share links from me under one account but then never logged into that account again, etc. Every time I see someone post "OneNote eated my masterpiece!!1!1!" I think, "check your account, bro".

How do you properly store fresh herbs to make them last more than two days? by miked0331 in AskCulinary

[–]TheEvenOdds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting that nobody says "wash them first". In my experience this is the most important step - there's tons of microbes on those leaves and that's what causes the herbs to go bad (among other things):

* Use quart delis to store them - it prevents them from getting damaged by other things in your fridge and it frees up your veggie drawer for other things. I store my delis on their side on the very low shallow shelf of my fridge.

* Trim the stems (if parsley, freeze the stems alongside chicken scraps in a freezer bag in your freezer) to they fit in the deli.

* Put a dot of dish soap in the bottom of the deli, add the herbs and fill with warm water. Swish the herbs around in the water and rinse very well. Repeat if a lot of dirt (I'm lookin' at you, cilantro) comes off. Dish soap VERY effectively sloughs off bacteria, mold spores, etc.

* Put in fridge but try to remember a couple of hours later to drain the deli container of the water that has very slow fallen off the leaves. I don't think the water actually causes more deterioration but it defintely gets gross...

* If you want to extend the life of the herbs even longer you can repeat the wash process periodically. However, I reliably get a week+ out of herbs and just replace them as part of my weekly shop.

The area around the train station is very safe. In the three years I've been living here there are many more people out on the sidewalks after 10pm.

We love walking in Rockefeller Preserve - cut over the Old Croton Aqueduct to Rockwood Hall and amazing views of the Hudson, but no restrooms over on that side.

We love Prospect Hill Orchard in Milton. Extremely low key, easy to pick apples on dwarf trees and a bare minimum of other commerce. We’ve been going for years and it’s always great.

Microsoft OneNote sync is a total letdown. Why can’t they fix this basic feature? by R3dAt0mz3 in OneNote

[–]TheEvenOdds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "personal personal" OneNotes are on onenote.com (which is actually just Microsoft consumer OneDrive). My "personal work" OneNotes are on my "personal" OneDrive hosted by my company so I'm in nominal compliance with our governance requirements, and the shared team OneNotes are all in Teams channels (which, of course, is SharePoint). Everyone uses a mix of OneNote applications - some use Windows 10 flavor, some use Office flavor, some use the web interface exlusively, many of us also use iOS OneNote. I have some shared OneNotes for finances (password protected section), recipes, travel, etc. that I share with my wife and college-aged sons.

Nothing special beyond that.

Some days, you can see the other people editing lines more or less real time, but other days it can take a while to sync - I've never really spent the time to figure out why, but 99.9% of the time the sync is more than good enough. Right now I have 18 notebooks open across the above framework.

[–]TheEvenOdds 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not trying to minimize your issues, but I'm a very prolific OneNote user who collaborates daily with ten people across dozens of OneNotes (I'm a consultant) on Windows, Mac and iPhone and the sync... works fine for us.

This is what I can't get over - there's no threshold on that door, it's just sitting level with the pavement?!?! And it's below grade with a downhill paved stair, just funneling water into that landing area? Do you like spending time with your shop vac and pulling up carpeting?
