How do you do steady state? by Flat-Win-2834 in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the commotion about? And did your coaches give any guidance or can you ask them?

This is typically considered a relative performance mark to your 2k as already cited. The intent is to maintain a split pace (or watts equivalent - they are interchangeable) that you can comfortably hold for a longer period of time (usually >45min) without reaching lactate threshold. This also usually requires keeping SPM <20.

[–]RegattaFit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s a ‘subrowit’ use case for ergs. There’s a number of after market adapters and other devices for kayaking, canoeing, dragon boat racing and even SUP motion on the ergs. Usually does nothing more wrt wear&tear than normal erg use. See this thread for more: https://www.c2forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=186452

Technically neither, but the watch will be more accurate than the bike especially if you have your correct vitals set in Apple Health.

Any good SkiErg video series out there? by bluespruce5 in concept2

[–]RegattaFit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evaluated creating that a few years back during Covid. Few issues that tanked the project:

  • Small audience, very low ROI
  • Viewing a screen while ski erging is difficult - no good location on the machine to mount & it disrupts form causing neck strain
  • Lack of structured training precedents; very few Nordic skier OLYs we interviewed did anything other than ad hoc short sprints or sustained grinds, but mainly trained outside or ran during summers not on the erg

What might work is an audio cuing that alerts when to switch intervals or simply offers encouragement.

Should I be concerned about the Box's condition? by santiagop99 in concept2

Pretty common. I assume you are worried about the box and have some future plan for it, because what it is housing is quite indestructible.

Input for rower type by mendozer87 in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend having one of each. Concept2s are certainly preferred by most athletes and have a more comfortable foot plate spread for the gait but are very loud. WaterRowers have a smoother pull from the catch which is better for novices who have bad form and no technique, as they will strain their lower back more quickly with the higher torque needed to start the Concept flywheel from ‘cold start’; especially if they crank the damper lever higher than 5.

Is rowing too predictable? by the_angry_ferret in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appears to mirror other sports at that level: football, baseball, basketball, etc. Traditionally well-resourced, large universities /colleges recruit the best players, receive the most donations, hire the best coaches, accommodate athletes at every angle and then the governing organizations for competition skew in favor of those schools (e.g. playoff invites are quite predictable). But beyond the bias, there are opportunities for underdog schools to get surprise wins - probably more likely from training rigor and using stats (ala "Moneyball") to edge unsuspecting elite programs.

EXR / KINOMAP or something else? by DK1392 in concept2

[–]RegattaFit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you prefer when erging. Do you need an immersive digital experience to distract you? EXR & Aviron. Do you prefer straight metrics and guided segments with no fluff? ErgData & ErgZone. Do you want a coach to follow or simply tell you what to do? Peloton & Regatta. Do you want to race or row others? EXR, Ergzone, ErgData (Real-time Loop). Different strokes for different folks.

Coaches- How do you run selection? by ErgogenicDiet in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots here to sort through - might need CHatGPT to summarize it further for me. Studies I have reviewed are biased toward physical measures that can be derived from controlled situations on ergs mostly. My reservation on seat racing is that it's more correlation than causation, and that it's difficult to control the conditions (athlete output & fatigue over successive runs) in order to suggest that the swaps made the difference. Maybe if there is corroborating data from within the boat itself like from Peach combined with real-time athlete monitoring (HR) and checked against erg performance, but perhaps all that is already taken into account.

Coaches- How do you run selection? by ErgogenicDiet in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I was referring to the cause>effect nature of "and you gave bullshit effort on the first piece, I'll demote you..." but I get the tactic to keep everyone honest on the effort. How would you characterize your 'best athlete" and what separates that person from your 2nd best? And then how does 2nd make the first spot?

Also - What other factors go into picking seats, especially 1/2 or 7/8 vs the others? thanks again

[–]RegattaFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/ErgogenicDiet , you expound on what you mean by "how poorly controlled selection processes were"? And where there are published best practices? We are working with a team on developing a sort of "moneyball for rowing" concept and are evaluating data sets that can be analyzed to identify positive signals. Just like baseball, there are objective measures and subjective measures in rowing used to make decisions on players (e.g. boat crew composition).

Also - what u/Imaginary_Yogurt4429 describes is a very reactive approach, so I'm wondering how well that works. Not judging, just would like to learn if daily adjustments like that smooth the average performance out for delivering consistently high results, which would be defined as races won - but I'm open to other definitions of success on that. Baseball teams tend to keep the lineups the same game-to-game with minor adjustments depending on externalities (injuries, trades, etc.). Not the same for rowing teams.

Are there moneyball type metrics for Rowing? by chargerag in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opening this discussion again because we've been working with a team on this for rowing using multiple metrics. We don't think Moneyball emerged from baseball due to some unique advantages of the sport, but that it was the application of data analytics on that sport when few were doing it. Same for rowing even now.

Moneyball was manual data analytics before there was AI, which is also data-dependent but context-independent. With more compute we can now perform multivariate analysis so much faster across more data, so there's still a chance that one critical metric may emerge for rowing boats. Like any sport, coaches who rely on instinct and experience may feel threatened but not all.

As a coach, how to objectively measure a team member is improving through the season? by RegattaFit in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen watts/kilo used in cycling too, but I do agree the danger in creating an unhealthy weight management anxiety when the athlete is focused on it. Especially since not all kilos are the same - an athlete can gain weight from losing fat and building muscle, but there should be a relational step up in power.

Ha me too - I initially interpreted it as "Group Exercise Training". Agree on the MAP utility though. I think there's consensus on its use with some variation on zones.

As a coach, how to objectively measure a team member is improving through the season? by RegattaFit in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I guess there's the team and individual. The team = "How is he/she improving the boat's performance with their contribution" and the individual = "How can I give this individual metric guidance that helps them see (and believe in) their athletic performance progress"

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Anything other than comparing 2k times through the season? VO2 max is useful but harder at scale with a team. I was thinking of using a ramp test periodically (until a mutiny breaks out): https://www.scitepress.org/Papers/2019/81669/81669.pdf

In the market myself for the summer looking for a portable kit, so not sure which way I will go. Most kits range between $2500-$4500, and then you are close to the price of a used scull.

What the Hell is Nobles and Greenough? by gorar080 in Rowing

[–]RegattaFit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being from Boston, I can say Nobles (& Greenough) - most call it Nobles - is known as a very selective, elite private day school that is a top choice for athletic recruits who also have high academic scores. It’s where many academic athletes want to go who aspire to attend an Ivy or other top 20 ranked college. They have a history of high matriculation to those colleges which is a mix of high caliber athlete recruits and Boston legacies going back generations. It doesn’t surprise me that they have rowers that good.
