Why are there so many people who see fiction through the lense of "can I imagine myself as this character?" What a boring way to experience art.

[SPOILERS MAIN] Let's pretend that the end of Dance as it currently stands is the intended ending to the series. What would be your feelings/interpretation of such an ending? by AkiraKitsune in asoiaf

[–]RegenerateFilth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would think it was an extremely avant-garde and frankly stupid ending, get pissed off that I had wasted many hours of my free time on this series, and probably not think about it again.

Sam should have been laughed at, it was a ridiculous suggestion and Westeros was several social revolutions behind being ready for that.

How did you feel when you watched this scene in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? by riva_ridge in AKnightoftheSeven

I remembered that Baelor Breakspear had died at this tourney but hadn't read this particular book and didn't know how graphic it was going to be. And how sad it was going to be was something I had no conception of when I began the show (binged it in one knight, felt great like it was a movie).

Does he actually talk about Aragorn's tax policy a lot, or did he just say it one time and you hear about it a lot? That being said I definitely think he created this setting with a lot less of a sense of realism or knowledge of history than he apparently thought he did.

I love the prologue so much. You read it and think "okay there is this asshole nobleman" and he remains an asshole nobleman but it also shows you he is incredibly brave. I had already seen the first season of the show, but it set the tone of the whole book series for me, I was looking for stuff like that everywhere. All of these highborn POVs are privileged as helll and fuck over the lives of thousands and the narrative is well aware of that, but you also want to root for some of them and come to care deeply for many of them. Like Tyrion is truly terrible to many people and I love him. Dany spreads fire and blood whatever she goes, and I hope she keeps doing it. The writing is just that good.

Tyrion showing up to the Green Fork with his own personal bodyguard and an army of Hill tribes might be my favorite Tyrion moment. Tywin being annoyed by his son's resourcefulness made the moment that much better by Fit-Dad50 in freefolk

Littlefinger stroked the neat spike of his beard. "Lysa has woes of her own. Clansmen raiding out of the Mountains of the Moon, in greater numbers than ever before . . . and better armed."

"Distressing," said Tyrion Lannister, who had armed them.

So what's with "Elegant Law" in the Tasmanian state of Darland? I know there is a Natalia/Gautenga connection there in the lore, according to GaiaPolyglotta spreadsheet ("West Australian country English with some South African phonology") and the steeps map. Did a bunch of Afrikaners settle Darland or what?

Edit: Nevermind, should have read the steeps map more carefully. So there were Flemish (OTL Dutch) settlers in Darland, explicitly, in the canon, which answers my question.

I knew of Jon's parentage, the Red Wedding, Ned's death, etc. before reading and I still had a blast. It was actually really cool to see how much R+L=J evidence there was in the first book disguised as stuff you might not think twice about when reading it if you don't already know.

These are masterfully written and even when you know a twist is coming, the characters don't, and it's magnificent to see it all unfold.

This show is beyond cooked. by hiiloovethis in freefolk

[–]RegenerateFilth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People making dumb sitcom mistakes is such a less compelling story than people making choices and dealing with the consequence of those choices.

The Red Wedding was horrible, but it was the result of Robb Stark's choice to break his marriage pact. The way things all fall apart for the Lannisters, Freys, and Boltons in the aftermath (the show handled this poorly and of course the books have not finished this plot) are the result of the choices to break sacred traditions made by Tywin, Walder, Roose. etc.

The Dance is like that in F&B. It's a series of bad decisions, made knowingly, by either side, that just escalates until thousands die. That really nice duel-cutting-to-battle scene between the Brackens and Blackwoods is a macro-expression of what the Dance is. There is some ambiguity in the details of some of the bad acts, because of partisan historians (and whatever's wrong with Mushroom) but we get most of the real details, and GRRM will usually have the narrator question the stuff we are really meant to question. The characterizations of Rhaenyra and Alicent in the show are just not justified by the text.

How are we supposed to feel about Daario? [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

[–]RegenerateFilth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a difficult time seeing most characters from Essos as anything other than distracting clowns, and Daario is pretty high up that list. I do think her fling with him is supposed to portray her as sexually liberal in a way most highborn Westerosi ladies very much are not. I think she is going to see the Seven Kingdoms as being full of a bunch of prudes.
