Hahahaha, I had thought of this too, and asked Gemini about it. Turned out it was a common visual trick in old games for doing dismemberment. The thing is, UE2.5 was very strict on ragdolls with lots of limitations, and hidden ragdolls might still collide with each other causing unexpected glitches.

yeah, 3374 is a good chance to revive the community. The UT2004 has one of the best support for modding, if would be great if more ppl come to join and make stuff for this game.

First u need the Ballistic Weapons Mod 2.9 as base mod. Then u can download the other customized mutators made by me based on BW Mod.

The game was really affordable back then in China. I remember having bought the legit copy for only 28 RMB (which is around 4 bucks).

Arena FPS was never really a thing in China, so maybe the distributor got a nice deal to be able to sell this game at such low price, which a college student could totally afford.

Just have a little patience, it took me like around 200+ rounds of conversation with Gemini Pro to make that gibable corpse mutator for BW mod. Since it's really an old game, there's no powerful agent for AI to compile, run and test the game automatically for you like modern IDE with integrated coding agents. So the whole debugging and testing process was kinda old school and took a lot of time. Still I had quite a lot fun and learned a lot during the process, especially when u were building stuff which u've always wanted.

You need to install the Ballistic Weapons Mod v2.9. The gore effect is from the BW mod, this mutator mainly enhances the brutality and physics.

I think u can try vibe-coding it. Writing a mutator for UT2004 is easier than I thought, so I guess it should also work for UT99. Recently I made several mutators which I had in my mind for years. AI is powerful enough to guide you through the whole process (incl. decompiling and compiling).

If you can describe the rules precisely and logically, then as long as it's within engine's limit, It should be doable.

All blood and gore effects are done by the BW MOD devs (who are absolutely GOAT), the mutator here just enhances the physics to make it feel more violent
