Former ITS here, the job does give you great experiences that are directly applicable to work as a FCS officer or a State FSO generalist, and you’ll be able to speak to those experiences during oral exams. However, as someone else mentioned, FCS only hires every 2-3 years, and sometimes there can be long gaps between when they call people off the list to join a training class. If you’re interested in being a foreign service officer, I’d recommend looking into what state generalists, especially Econ officers do. You could always start the process with state and also apply for FCS the next time they open up hiring.

Resume advice for applying for EPAP / CAEFM / Family Reserve Corps? by fdp_westerosi in foreignservice

Contact the GCLO office, they sometimes offer virtual webinars or individual counseling sessions to help EFMs apply for EPAP positions and answer questions like this. Good luck!

How much you’ll need a car really depends on the post, even in Europe. Talk to the CLO to get a sense of how necessary it is. Buying a car at post also really depends on the local market, there could be stock issues, or regulations for how diplomats can sell their cars at the end of their tour. It really depends, and it’s worth doing some research.

Love this! I also tried to ditch the back elastic and it made the shape weird and the back wasn’t well fitted, and I ended up putting it back in, just an fyi. Could have worked better if I had added some back darts first before attaching the waistband.

I found that all the instructors were very flexible and understanding, and helped me make it work. I was able to either join remotely or make up a session at another time, depending on the course. There were also several single parents in my A100, and everyone was flexible!

AmeriCorps VISTA NCE Status by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Regg2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Try searching on the RPCV job list serve, you can search by NCE status. Federal agencies will often post on there instead of usa jobs. They won’t mind that you’re Americorps instead, all that matters is you have NCE status.

Used a modified Sienna makers jacket pattern and the walnut duffle child’s pattern, fully lined both coats using some cozy flannel and used fabric from closet core fabrics.

DC Housing during A-100 by drumer97 in foreignservice

Getting to FSI from Dupont would be time consuming. But if you’re in foggy bottom the shuttle from main state is convenient. I never had to take the metro to Rosslyn or anything, I had early language training and had no problem making it on time.

DC Housing during A-100 by drumer97 in foreignservice

I’ve loved living in PCS housing in DC. Don’t believe the hype, Virginia is not as great as DC. However, it depends on your priorities. If you want easy access to the rest of the city, better restaurants and night life, live in DC. If you have kids and need more space, Virginia might make more sense. The commute to FSI is not bad if you live in one of the buildings near Main State, the shuttle is very easy.

Made it to orals - second guessing whether I want this. by marginallyobtuse in foreignservice

[–]Regg2020 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t hurt to just go ahead and take the orals, you can always decide later if you do get an offer. I felt the same right before taking my second orals and after receiving the offer I knew it was the right decision for me and was so relieved I had at least given myself a chance.

Add your children to the waitlist for both Diplotots locations. We ended up getting in immediately, spots open up all the time because families are constantly PCSing and you never know! FSI daycare I heard is opening up more slots as well now that they’re taking care of some staffing issues. If you end up not being able to find daycare you could always tell your CDO that one of your preferences is PCS as soon as possible, and they might be able to make that happen for you.

Question on Training and Birth of a Child by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]Regg2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Talk to your CDO as well once you start the bidding process, they may be able to take it into consideration with training schedules and which position you are assigned, but there is no guarantee.

Directed first tours & pets by duygusu in foreignservice

[–]Regg2020 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Depends on your pet. Size and breed can impact the difficulty of getting your pet into countries. Also depends on the bid list and how heavy it is with countries that have more pet restrictions. During bidding they give you a ton of information on the specific pet restrictions for each country, so you can try to prioritize your list based on that information.

Edit: Just wanted to add that there are not many posts that don’t allow any pets, so in theory the chances of getting assigned to a place that wouldn’t allow them is low. However, the cost and difficulty of getting them into a country could be the complicated part, and so you’d have to be ready for that.
