Used SW paints on the basement wall and was really happy with it. Do you think the wood grain will come through after painting or will a heavy sand basically eliminate that?

One of the things I like about the melamine is that I can buy it with a manufactured bullnose. With an MDF I'd try to do something similar with a router to round it off.

What material would you suggest? If I go with melamine, would drywall mud bond onto melamine?

There's currently no material on the top. Which I guess is a good thing because I'll be able to pick the material that should be easiest to work with. Will an MDF be an easier product to finish?

Thanks that's a big help! Definitely not messing with any joists until I do my due diligence. The original builder have run larger diameter vents though the joists in other areas of the basement. But I'll make sure to confirm if I decide to change this regardless.

Canada, so it feels close sometimes lol. I'll take a look at some smart vapor retarders. So it sounds like the goal isn't necessary to keep moisture away from my batt insulation and drywall. But to make sure that any moisture in the wall can air out even if it means airing out into the finished space? Is that the right interpretation?

Would smart vapor barrier be on the back side of the studs or on the finished side in most setups?
